StellarNight
is a small business that
has grown in the field of publishing.
1988 - The Beat Goes
On - a local Auckland gig guide.
1990 - Phil Tripp
owner and editor of the Australasia Music
Industry Directory published a NZ section in his publication put
together by me.
1991 - NZ
Music Services
DIRECTORY - this had a shaky start. I
was convinced by those who knew better, that I should take the
publication to a 'professional print house' so they could make a really
good job of it. Well, they made the biggest mess you can imagine!
I could have done better with my eyes closed. AND then they rolled it
up really tight and put it in a tube with a poster - POSTAGE was about
4x more than keeping it a standard size, flat, and in an envelope - and
the product was badly altered by being rolled so tight! So from
then on I did it myself - just slowly collected the data over
the year and then on print time sent it back to the listees to check
and approve for publication. From 1992 to 2002 I was quite unwell, the
early and mid 90s were particularly difficult, but all I needed to do
to go to work was fall out of bed, into dressing gown and slippers and
get on the computer and the phone. Having something that I could
physically manage was great - keeping busy and being able to earn an
income really helped me manage my illness.
2000 - MayBook - I
published this for ten years in
conjunction with the Music Commission. I also helped out on these
publications; Pasifika 2002, Sweet2 2004, Places to Play 2004, Making
Music 2005. In early 2011, I handed the MayBook over
to them to run.
2011 - NZ Music
Industry DIRECTORY finds a new home with
Southern Exposure (the publishers of NZMusician Magazine.)
These publications
were all created as a need arose. The gig
guide was logical because I was out gigging, so information on venues,
bookings, gig guides, and advertising was what I was dealing with on a
daily basis and the DIRECTORY grew from the environment of being a
gigging/recording musician.
Various
posters, flyers, album covers, calendars,
postcards, art cards etc. and even a few videos later I find myself
back where I started playing music again – and nothing could make me
happier.
So over these StellarNight
pages you will find little glimpses of all
of the above and more.
