A BIG THANK YOU (SPASIBO), ROTARIANS!

Class of 1999

The Way Americans Do Business

In July - August 1999, 20 interns from the Siberian-American School of Management, University of Irkutsk and University of Maryland University College, visited Alaska, Texas, Oregon, California and Washington. They had a chance to see how 67 U.S. firms, banks and local governments operate in the market economy and what can be applied in Russia. It was a second internship sponsored by my fellow Rotarians all over the U.S. . The goal of the internship was to share with the Russian business students the inner workings of American businesses and to expose the managers-to be  to volunteerism and Rotary. While in the United States, they stayed with the Rotarians, “dined and wined” with them and observed their hosts both at work and at home. PDG Lloyd Morris (Alaska) and PDG Jim Aneff (Texas) who pioneered the program in 1998 have been conferred upon an honorary title “Professor Emeritus” at Irkutsk State University, Russia. Upon arrival at their Alma Mater the students shared their unique experiences and expressed a desire to join or start Rotary clubs in the future. Quite a few interns decided to join the Rotaract  Club “Irkutsk-Baikal.” The best is yet to come. In 2000 10-12 students will be able to visit Australia and even New Zealand…

With 15 years in Rotary, I cannot think of another program that contributes any more to the values and objectives of Rotary International.

I look forward to being part of this again.I have formed a committee of six individuals in the Anchorage Downtown Rotary Club to speerhead this effort in the coming year.

James S. Aneff, Jr.
Internship Coordinator
(Texas)

Your educational program is outstanding. It is my hope that if Rotarians in Texas can help just a small amount to further the education of your very bright young people, then this is what we wish to do. For us, it is a tangible way to help students.

I am sure you know that two of your graduates are now in Ft.Worth, Texas working on a Master’s degree at Texas Christian University. Anna Nikoforova was such an outstanding student here and gave such a fine impression that one Rotarian worked this past year to obtain scholarships for her to return here for graduate work. She and her husband are now in Texas. I, along with a close friend of mine who works for Merrill Lynch, have written letters of recommendation for Nikita Pirogov who has applied for several different scholarships in the United States. Therefore, we never know what opportunities students who are interns will have in the future. For us, this is another possibility to be of assistance to these talented young people.

Finally, we look forward to continuing to help you with this program in the future.

I hope the interns had a good experience and learned many things. They were fresh, charming, and always well-mannered. All of my club fell in love with them and worked very hard for them to have a good experience. This forges an enduring link with Irkutsk Baikal Club.

PDG Steve Yoshida
(Host, Homer, AK)

We felt so privileged to be part of the program. I think I can speak for our club when I say that you can count on the Homer-Kachemak Bay Rotary club to host students on this program in the future. Congratulations on creating such a fine program!

ALASKA
This summer the hospitable land of Alaska welcomed four students of the Siberian-American School of Management: Daniel Sazhin, Boris Ponomaryov, Sergey Violin, and Aleksey Nemokaev. The summer internship program was thoroughly planned and implemented so that all students really enjoyed staying in their host families and acquiring invaluable business expertise in the American companies.

Daniel Sazhin:

I stayed in Fairbanks, “The Last Frontier” of Alaska and received hands-on-training exploring the operations of Alyeska pipeline service Co., Willliams North Pole refinery, and Seekins Ford-Lincoln-Mercury dealer, companies with the highest professional and ethical standards. In addition to the interesting business internship program, I got to know the Alaskan culture and was fascinated by the severe beauty of the Alaskan nature. The hospitality of the host families, Terry Strle and Steve Ferree, and the efforts of the program coordinator, Ken Martinson, made my stay in Alaska wonderful and unforgettable.

Boris Ponomaryov I was fortunate to visit the most important and vital businesses of Homer, a small town with great opportunities. The most remarkable and valuable part of my experience in Homer were its people and warm feelings for Russians. During one month of internship, I was able to explore the nature of the National Bank of Alaska and plunge into the managerial operations of Land’s End Hotel. My heartfelt thanks go to the host families: Jon Faulkner, Denise and Roger Cline, Steve and Noko Yoshida; host businesses: Homer News, Mark Turner, KBBI, Susan Kernes, Land’s End Resort, Jon Faulkner, National Bank of Alaska, Julie Woodworth, South Peninsula Hospital, Charlie Franz, Charlie Button, Tech Connect, Craig Forrest; KDLL Radio, Dave Dvorak.

Alexey Nemokaev I was hosted by the Juneau Rotary Clubs (presidents Laurie Whistler, John McConnochie, Robert Valliant). Juneau, the capital of Alaska, has a population of only 30,000 people. However, the internship there was a very special experience. I improved my financial skills in the Juneau branch of Waste Management –a large disposal company in the U.S. Judy Peterson of Juneau and Tom Koecher of Anchorage did a wonderful job as my mentors. They got me involved in stimulating activities. I am grateful to the team of Capitol Disposal and Arrow Refuse for the pleasure of working with them. I had the opportunity to visit and get additional business experience in Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium, National Bank of Alaska, Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation, Alaska State Government, Arbor Capital Management. William Alaska Petroleum, Mr. Randy Newcomer. Thanks to Kenneth Brewer, Gaylene Flannagan, Paul Hanson, Sharon Barton, and Robert Tonkin… Of course, the internship would not have been so successful and exciting for me without love, care, and support of my host families: Richard and Ellen Cook, Paul Hanson, Robert and Kerri Tonkin, and Tom and Peggy Koecher. Special thanks go to Jim Sepal, John and Peggy Ann McConnochie, and Scott Fisher for making my life during the internship full of joy and memorable moments.

Washington

Evgeny Kirdey I am more than thankful to those who made this internship possible, and to those who made this trip interesting, useful, and just amazing for me! First of all, it is our school and Rotary International who sponsored this. It is also the staff of K2 Corporation where I worked who made everything to show me how American business system works and involve me in this system. And of course, it is my host families who turned out to be so hospitable and helpful and made me feel at home there. Due to to them, I  now know that I can easily meet wonderful people in the U.S. with whom I won’t feel any cultural barriers at all!  Thanks very much, Mike & Marcy McCarthy, Gary & Theo Christmas, Bryan Smith, Paula Lesnick, and  Duane Ruud of Commercial Fabrics Mtg. .

California

Alex Naumov Hi, my dearest American friends: Laura and Dan Days, Jane Sinclair, Ann and Pete Crandalls, Jim Zentner, Steve Ashley, Jon Johnstone, many others. Thank you, Pete,  for arranging my Safeway internship. Thank you, Steve and Jon, for mentoring, guiding me, and making my internship useful and educational. I consider, however,  that person-to-person relationships, friendship, and sharing each other’s culture are even more important. So, the most valuable things for me are friendship, care, and love of Laura and Dan, Jane, Ann and Pete, and as well as of other friends I’ve made in the U.S. Thank you, guys. I was lucky to have met you. I love you all!

Irina Palamarchuk
and Nastya Gerasimova
That wonderful month in Turlock, California, will stay forever in our memory as a great professional experience, hospitable friendly people, and gorgeous nature. Dear Stammerjohans, Triebsches, Janzens, Brewers, Ahlems, Clausses, and Honores,  you became our second parents and real friends in this  interesting community. We even could not imagine before that talking to young Americans about “wild cold Siberia” and discovering the secrets of cheese production could be so exciting! We were very pleased to represent the Siberian-American School of Management to Turlock Rotary club membership who really impressed us by enthusiasm and sincere concern about the community. Thank you very much,  The City of Turlock, The School District of Turlock, Turlock Irrigation District.

Texas

Michael A. Shelepugin First of all, I want to say thank everybody who took part in the organization of this summer internship. Especially, I want to thank everybody who made my dreams come true in Texas. If I had not gone to Texas, I would not have gotten and seen that much I actually did. Besides I worked for import-export company W. R. Zanes & Co. Of La., Inc., I also got acquainted with work of such companies as IWARE, Inc. (Logistics & Delivery), FedEx, China Airlines, Nokia, etc. Thanks to my host family I lived with for a month, I visited different parts of the United States: Oklahoma and Louisiana with its one of the most beautiful cities in the world - New Orleans. So I am overwhelmed by impressions  and an invaluable experience, and I hope that someday I will be able to implement it in the real life.Thank you very much!!!

Now Auckland New Zealand and Sydney Australia are eagerly awaiting the "Class of 2000". We are looking forward to have
