More Projects
The three oldest of the eastern clubs -- Irkutsk, Magadan and Vladivostok -- have designed 13 successful projects generating contributions from Alaska, New York, New Zealand, Japan, Republic of China, British Columbia, and Oregon. Nine of these were supported by Rotary Foundation Matching Grants. Projects included secondary school computer classes in Magadan; a program for disabled children, hospital equipment and hot meals for senior citizens in Irkutsk; and a youth baseball league in Vladivostok.
In Novosibirsk, Russian Rotarians have planted trees along the River Ob and are transforming a former dump into a children*s park. Yelisovo Rotarians regularly visit a home for the developmentally disabled and provide special entertainment. The Yakutsk Rotary club staged an exhibit of art created by local disabled children. The Chita Rotary club has created crisis centers for homeless children. Every month, the Blagoveshensk Rotary club holds a clothing drive for the local orphanage. Nakhodka Rotarians provide school supplies for students at a local school for delinquents.
Even before it was admitted to RI, the new Rotary club in Esso was committed to meeting the humanitarian and cultural needs of the native Avan people. In May, a troupe of Avan performers performed at Rotary meetings and visited schools in Alaska, Washington, Oregon and British Columbia. Previously, The Rotary Foundation sponsored the Pavel Sharonov Ensemble from Novosibirsk in a tour throughout Canada and the US, including a performance at the 1996 RI Convention in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Through District 5010*s Children of Russia project, 18 RI districts (in Australia, Canada, and the US) and The Rotary Foundation co-sponsored 29 projects with a total value of $590,000 to meet some of the critical needs of east Russian children. The communities benefiting are: Petropavlovsk,Yelisovo, Vladivostok, Nakhodka, Khabarovsk, Magadan, Palatka, Yakutsk, Irkutsk, Blagoveschensk, Chita, Ulan-Ude, Novosibirsk, Barnaul, Omsk and Tomsk.
In mid-July 1998, Rotary clubs in Magadan and Vladivostok will receive a Project Hope shipment of donated medical supplies, equipment and vaccines worth more than US $2 million. The shipment is being coordinated by Rotarians in Colorado, USA, and is supported by The Rotary Foundation and Rotary clubs in three US states (Arizona, Colorado, Georgia). Project Hope, which has long worked in western Russia, is relying on Rotary clubs in eastern Russia to access the needs of their communities and help distribute goods to hospitals, clinics and hospices.
