POLAND

ROTARY in POLAND commenced in 1931 with the chartering of the Warsaw Rotary Club.

At the outbreak of World War 2 there were 8 Rotary Clubs in Poland. There are some good Web sites, and Polish Rotary is best told by Polish Rotary.

An interesting comment picked up from the English version of the BYDGOSZCZ Rotary Club is the difficulty which some Polish Rotary experienced with the Roman Catholic Church in Poland .

It seems that the Church effectively prevented the establishment of the POZNAM R C and was instrumental in the winding up of the BYDGOSZCZ Rotary Club. The English version of that clubs home page tells us that of the 18 members of the club 16 were Freemasons, and just then Freemasons were not the " favourite flavour " with the Catholic Church. Being predominantly R C, members did not seem to like taking their family to Church and hear the priest preach against involvement with Rotary due to its perceived connections with Freemasonry…

Things have changed. In 1979 the Pope received a deputation of Rotarians and praised Rotary for its good works…and of course today we have a Polish Pope….

Since the rechartering of the Warsaw Rotary Club, we seem to have at least 43 Rotary Clubs and 8 Rotoract Clubs in Poland in District 2230 being governed by a Polish Governor Alojzi Gzella from LUBLIN R C.

The Homepage of District 2230 is extensive, with photographs, Comprehensive list of Officers, Publications list, Governors List, Annual Calendar, History of Rotary in Poland, and a full list of Clubs all complete with internet e mail addresses.and under "Spotkania Klubowe" we find the meeting places of the Rotary Clubs, phone numbers and times be it that days of the week are in Polish.

Another feature of this seemingly very well organised District are the listings of members of the Rotary inter country committees between Poland and ..... Belgium/Luxembourg

France

Netherlands

Germany

Sweden

United Kingdom

These suggest that inter country Rotary assistance to Poland is extensive.
