The Fruits of Rotary Labour
Student scholarships a new concept to Latvia!
The Kumeu Rotary Club of New Zealand has the distinction of being the first rotary organization to have introduced the concept of a scholarship to Latvia. The idea of someone else paying for my child's education was foreign to Latvia.
Katharina Vagina (on right) is the first recipient of the Kuldiga-Kumeu RC scholarship. She is off to study English at Riga University. Katharina is flanked by Kumeu Clubs Henk Aalders and Charter President Uldis Kinis of Kuldiga RC.

Teaching English in a Kuldiga High School
A magnificent example of Rotary cooperation between a small NZ country club in its first year of existence and four national Rotary organizations.
Teachers are grossly underpaid in Latvia. English was not encouraged under Russian administration. With independence came a very great need for English teachers, many of the existing teachers were attracted by the much higher salaries offered by Latvian commercial firms, leaving the schools hopelessly understaffed.
Volunteers came from the U K, the USA and through rotary from New Zealand. Not long after this picture of Henk talking to an English class in Kuldiga, Kumeu Rotary sent a young teacher to Latvia to teach English.
Kumeu Club's efforts would not have been possible without the magnificent cooperation of Swedish District 2410, Finnish Rotary, Dutch and Swiss Rotary past District Governors and of course the hosting by the Kuldiga Rotary Club of Latvia.
