College House Association

Purpose

Through the CHA we aim to continue the College House community beyond university. We strive to create a link between former students, and also with the current students of College House.

The CHA continues to support the CH 'House Spirit' that made the place so vital in our day, and continues to make CH relevant to students.

It is a fairly grand plan to create House Spirit - in fact we have nothing to do with it.

Except...
  • for being one of the traditions, that helps impress that CH has a proud history
  • for rewarding the returning students who are most active in CH's community
  • for cooking a BBQ lunch for students at the end of lectures
  • for helping fill the Chapel on College Day

The BBQ - The CHA supplied the first 3 burner gas BBQs to the CHSA in 1990. (And being a student then, I can tell you we were suitably impressed! - SG) We replaced the poor old things in 1999, and cooked a lunch to mark the occasion. It was so successful that we decided to make it an annual event.

The lunch in question is on the first Saturday of 'Study week', and the only complaints have been from people who didn't get enough sausages - hence there have been no complaints!

The CHA Scholarship - This is awarded to a returning student who has given great support to the life of the house. We do tend to favour people who are not members of the CHSA (Student President, etc) at the time - as the latter are expected to front up! We are indebted to the Principal for nominations, and there is never a lack of suitable recipient!

We have been able to award a second scholarship for the last several years, and each time the recipients are people who have gone out of their way to help make CH into something like a home, rather than a hostel.

New timing for award of McLaren East Scholarship - Since 2004 the ME Scholarships have been awarded around the middle of each year. It is not for any sinister reason; in fact you could say that the CHA have been too successful.

The House itself had for several years considered the idea of rewarding leadership qualities of returners. 2004 was the first year that CH offered Leadership Scholarships to a number of returners. Around 20 are now awarded annually.

So you see many of the "good'uns" have already had their reward!

The BM at the time, Andrew Stockley, asked that the committee consider a slight change to the process, and award the McLaren East scholarships to returners who have shown extra effort despite not being recognised with the leadership scholarships.

We agreed that this was a remarkable way of recognising "effort unasked for", and as such fully supported the purpose of the Scholarships.

Don't you, the members of the CHA, agree?

Bright idea revitalises "second" Scholarship - For many years a regular part of the AGM has been the recommendation of a second scholarship. One per year is set in stone (or ink on paper if you wish to be precise) but the other was dependent on finances.

No longer need this be a consideration!

A remarkable suggestion by past CHA President David Saunders has lead to a "contributory" scholarship, made up by 10 members offering $50 each.

The idea has been embraced by members and the "second" scholarship has been over subscribed ever since, allowing us to award three scholarships for each of the past few years!

Thank you very much for your kind donations.

If you would like to be the first to support this scheme for next year, let us know.
