Rocky Bay Pics
UPDATE 29/01/2003
I was hoping to have some photos up of Camp by now but time has just slipped away. My intention was to put photos on a password secure page, however in viewing the photos most if not all are compliementary to the people in the photo and to the Group. If you feel that you would prefer not to have images of your Cub Scout or family on the internet please email me (link at the bottom of this page) and I will ensure that this is so. Please keep checking this page and I will do my best to get some up this weekend.
UPDATE 31/12/2002
Dave Holmes has offered his families 36' launch to help with sailing and gear transport to Rocky Bay. All scouts personal gear will be transported on the launch and this will be loaded on on Friday evening 3rd. We have organised a berth at Half Moon Bay marina where the launch will remain overnight. The berth will be either J1 or the refueling jetty (this can't be determined as yet). In the meantime Scouts only, head down to the marina and wait by Ray Bryant's Marine for directions. Meet there at 7.00pm
Stony Batter. We have secured a bus for a trip to the tunnels at Stony Batter (at the southern end of the Island just above Hooks Bay). This trip will be on Wednesday 8th January leaving camp at 9.00am. We have limited space on the bus (our contingent at camp is 35) but families are most welcome to join us and travel by private car, again this will have to be privately arranged. The bus will leave Stony Batter at 3.00pm and call in at Woolworths on the way back so Cubs and Scouts can do some shopping. Unfortunately we understand the shop at Rocky Bay has closed so replenishment of snack food may be limited to the Wednesday visit.
Fishing Rods. Have had a rethink on fishing rods - if the rod is enclosed in plastic as suggested, there is no reason why the trace sinker and hook can not stay on the line - there is no problem with tangling. The other reason (purely selfish) is the thought of setting up all the rods at the other end - a long and tedious task.
Visiting our campsite. Parents wishing to visit our campsite are most welcome. The easiest way for this to happen is to catch the Subritzky Ferry to Kennedy Point. Look for the bus company Jaguar Tours, hop onboard and ask to be dropped at the Scout camp at Rocky Bay. Rod of Jaguar tours can be contacted on 025 962 554 to confirm fares etc,
Visit Subritzkys website for ferry timetables http://www.subritzkyshipping.co.nz/
Don't forget signed Agreement forms please! - Friday night or Saturday morning at the ship would be great.
Summer Camp for Venturers, Scouts and Cubs
Where The property of Chris Reeves at Kauaroa Bay (part of Rocky Bay), Waiheke Island. Chris is an ex Venturer Leader and good friend of Bucklands Beach Sea Scout Group. When
Sat 4th January to Saturday 11th January 2003.
About
The camp will start on the Saturday morning and continue until the following Saturday afternoon. Venturers and Scouts will be sailing aver in our cutters and sunbursts and will be accompanied by our patrol boat. We have secured a truck to take Cubs and gear via Subritzkys. The cutters patrol boat and other support craft will leave from Eastern Beach and return to Bucklands Beach boat ramp. We will need some assistance to transport boats and trailers for the departure and return journeys. If the weather proves unsatisfactory for the crossing the launch or power boats will take the cutters and sunbursts in tow.
We will need to find a suitable larger launch/yacht to shadow the fleet and transport cubs and gear. If anyone can help or knows of a person willing to assist could they please let Graeme know on 570 9202 or email below.
At Rocky Bay we set camp just back from the beach amongst trees. We have access to a boatshed for use as the camp mess and sleeping should the weather turn foul. There is a real neat wharf (just been extended and widened this year) for fishing and diving at high tide. Other activities will include swimming sailing, rowing, tramping, ski-biscuit water-skiing and all the activity that goes with camp life. Highlight of the day would have to be a boat excursion late afternoon across the bay to spend a little pocket money. (something to do with "shopping withdrawal syndrome" I believe) Our group has been to Rocky Bay on three occasions to date, the last being in 1998. Its definitely a camp to remember with those who have been before requesting time and time again to go back there again. Well here it is people - start saving!
Costs
Cost of this camp will be $130 for the eight days which we hope covers all food, fuel, donations, etc. However this camp relies heavily on the use of boats / fuel and we may have to revisit the costs closer to the date.
Parents and Family
Parents are welcome to attend and camp as self contained family groups - i.e. own tents, food and cooking facilities. Toilets are shared basis (longdrop of our own creation) so numbers may be limited for convience and health reasons.
We plan to hold a meeting about Rocky Bay on Thursday 12th December 7.00pm at the ship. More details will be available at this meeting. Please email or phone Graeme if you are coming to camp (some have already) - it really helps planning to get a fix on numbers. Bring your consent form and monies to next cub or scout section meeting.
