BUCKLANDS BEACH SEA SCOUT GROUP
WELCOME TO KEAS
THE GROUP
Our Group name is Bucklands Beach Sea Scout Group. The Group is made up of 1
Venturer Unit, 1 sea based Scout Troop, 2 Cub packs and 1 Kea Club. All sea activities
begin at Scout level.
KEAS meet Monday 5.00 – 6.00pm. We are currently meeting at the
"DEPOT" behind the
Netball courts at Lloyd Elsmore Park, Highland Park. Up until Mid 2003 we met at our
Ship in Morrow Ave in Bucklands Beach. Unfortunately this was damged by fire and is
now in the process of being rebuilt. We hope to return there sometime in 2005. Note as
we are a Sea Scout Group we call our hall a “Ship”.
The Kea Leader is: Robert Gleed: 537 4097, 021 510894
UPON JOINING.
New entrants are invested as Keas usually on the second or third night. Although it is
preferable for the new Kea to be in uniform (T shirt and sweatshirt if it’s winter) we realise
that it is not always possible but would expect that every boy is in full uniform within 3 - 5
weeks. At the investing ceremony the Group provides scarf, woggle, badge and
certificate.
Before the investing ceremony new Keas are expected to learn the Kea Promise and
Motto and will be asked to recite these while being invested.
WHAT WE DO
We provide a programme (following the school terms) within the guidelines of the Scout
Movement and in line with the Kea Promise and Motto for that is fun and action filled for 6
to 8 year olds. We encourage, direct and find that the attempt, the action, the joining in
rallies enthusiasm. Our personal aim is for every Kea to enjoy themselves and get as
much out of their Kea years as they wish. Generally Keas move up to Cubs when they
are 8 years old at the beginning of a term. Where possible we try to ensure at least two
boys go up at the same time.
WHAT WE EXPECT FROM KEAS
1. To try and attend Kea night on a regular basis and make every effort to attend
any special
function or activity throughout the year. ( We recognise that this can be difficult at times with
other sports etc.)
2. To wear the FULL uniform to Kea nights and keep it in a neat and tidy condition.
3. To maintain a reasonable standard of behaviour, manners and attitude in keepingwith their Motto and Promise.
HOW PARENTS CAN HELP
We do need help with various activities and operate an informal roster system where we
may call for help with transport or assisting on a craft night or some other activity. Any
parent wishing to help out on a regular basis is most welcome. Please show an interest in
your keas’s activities, as parent participation is important both at home and on kea nights.
UNIFORM
Bucklands Beach Keas wear a uniform consisting of ·
Yellow Kea tee shirt Navy Ph: Sharon Little 534 4035
· Sweatshirt (available from Postie Plus)
· Navy or Black shorts (track pants or longs are acceptable in winter)
· Shoes in winter, Sandels or shoes in Summer.
GROUP SCARF
Upon investment new Keas will receive the Group Scarf and Kea woggle. Our group scarf
is red in colour with a yellow band by its edge and has the Group Badge on the peak at
the back. The Group badge comes from part of the Crest of the Buckland family who
settled and farmed this area.
Keas are expected to keep their scarf clean, named, ironed and neatly rolled. No other
Group has a scarf like this - it is a special part of the Bucklands Beach Group Kea, Cub,
Scout, Venturer and Leader uniform.
PROGRAMME
A programme outlining events, activities and dates will be handed out to all Keas at the
beginning of each term. Leaders meet to plan the term to ensure a quality of programme
is maintained. Follow-up reminder notices and permission slips are handed out for specific
events and outings etc. and we would ask parents to note and diarise information and to
return completed slips promptly to avoid missing out on the event.
COSTS
The current (2004) subscription cost to join Keas is $92.00 ($300.00 Family Maximum). A
subscription form will automatically be given out when it’s due.
