Lateral Worlds

Contacts: Eamon Zink (ph 626 4048) or Anna (ph 025 275 1576).
Brief: Mixed-genre fantasy, roleplaying emphasis, weekend-long games.

WANTED: Some brave adventurers, or at least characters with some motivation other than the easy life, and enthusiastic monsters to face about 42 hours of uncertain weather, treacherous terrain, gangs of sociopathic thugs wielding nasty looking weapons, dubious food and alcohol, sleepless nights, snaky GMs and very low wit.

The above is from the cover of the Lateral Worlds players manual, which is put together by Anna and Eamon for their weekend-long events. Those who attended their first two events recommend them most highly. Having read the manual, I can understand why. Theirs is a very detailed but still very playable system, particularly notable for its excellent character-development scheme.

The games are based in a disreputable little town by the name of Dithwae, on the edge of a vast Empire that spans every fantasy genre ever written and almost all places and periods of historic interest. This, according to the rulebook, explains the fact that during the game you may encounter characters from Tolkien's Shirelands talking with Warhammer gretchen. Players are expected to prepare about a page of background on their characters before the game, making this the most roleplaying intensive live game that I've heard of currently running in Auckland.
