I am always happy to provide guiding support for anyone wishing to explore some of the less accessible fishing spots around the Omarama area. This will generally comprise travel by 4WD to an area offering good fishing prospects, staying with you during the day, assisting with fly selection, fish location, netting, etc as required, and seeing you back to your accommodation at the end of the day. My personal favourite is the Tekapo river (below) which is fed in part from Lake Tekapo and part from feeder streams. It has an excellent stock of fish throughout much of its length and fish over 2kg (about 5lb) are not uncommon. The river is braided and bordered by willows in many places. It is a delight to fish. Although much of the road leading to the river
and along its length can be negotiated by car, access is effectively restricted
to 4WD because of the condition of three or four sections of the access
road. Cars should therefore not be taken on this road

The Ahuriri River (below) is fed direct from the mountain range that forms the spine of the South Island. In the lower reaches there are abundant Brown and Rainbow trout of small to medium size - up to 1.5kg (about 4lb) - whilst in the upper reaches the numbers are very much lower but there are a higher proportion of larger fish upwards of 5lb in weight. Occasionally trout over 4kg (about 9lb) are reported caught. Fishing in the lower reaches is easy, moving from pool to pool along a braided course with comparatively shallow water. The top of the river is more confined, tends to be deeper, and fishing requires greater stealth and good technique. Access to the river is good, in some cases requiring permission from the local farmer before entering onto farm land. Public roads run close to the river for the greater part of its length. The upper reaches are contained within the recently
formed Ahuriri Conservation Park, a National Park administered by the Department
of Conservation. They have locked off the road giving access
to the top of the river, requiring anyone wishing to travel further to
do so on foot. Accordingly, for now at least, the upper reaches of
the river are strictly for the more energetic fisherman.
