Hi - I'm Bill Rolfe.
Welcome to New Zealand - and welcome to fishing in Omarama.
If you'd like to learn
to fly fish for trout then come and spend a few days in Omarama in New
Zealand's South Island, and let me teach you the basics of the sport.
Once you've mastered
the fundamentals you can carry on to fish our New Zealand rivers and lakes
yourself and have a vacation to remember.
Even if you've never
fished before, learning to cast a fly isn't too hard, and the basic information
about lines, knots, fly selection, where to find fish, etc. can be picked
up pretty quickly by most people.
Why come fishing in
New Zealand? As you've probably heard, here in New Zealand we have
some of the best trout fishing in the world - not just because the trout
are especially large - and some certainly are! - but also because of the
conditions in which anglers enjoy their sport.
New Zealand is renowned
for its 'clean green' image - and for good reason. We have no dangerous
wild animals, no snakes and very few insects to worry about.
The rivers and lakes are almost always crystal clear, the trout plentiful
and the scenery is quite simply exquisite. Ask anyone who's been
here.
Every year thousands
of overseas visitors come to New Zealand and fish for trout for the first
time in their lives. And year after year large numbers
of anglers return to explore our many lakes and rivers to fish some more.
Yet apart from a few
high profile rivers in the central North Island of New Zealand there is
very little fishing pressure on our fisheries - simply because we have
so many lakes and rivers for the angler to choose from.
The weather around
the Omarama area is generally fairly dry and warm. The area has a very
low rainfall but the rivers have their origins in the mountains where prodigious
rainfalls are common. This means that river levels are generally great
for fishing and the weather rarely causes problems.
Whether you want to
learn the basics of fly fishing for trout, or you simply need someone to
show you some good water, early booking is essential.
I am happy to answer
questions about your trip within New Zealand and discuss accommodation,
travel options, places to fish or simply the 'must see' locations.
So I invite you to
have a look through this web site and hope I can be of service.
