Island Gully Date: March 2009 Where: Molesworth Station Description: DOC Access: Sited approx 200m off the Hanmer Springs-St. Arnaud Rd. which is a toll/gravel road not really suitable for the family car although popular with cyclists. Comments: A DOC hut featuring four bunks and wood burning fire located just north of the highest publicly accessible road pass in N.Z., Island Saddle at 1,347m, and close to the Wairau River headwaters. Well worth a visit. |
James Mackay Date: Feb 07 Where: Kahurangi National Park, DoC Parkmap 274-13 Kahurangi Description: DOC (26) Access: 6.5 hours from Perry Saddle hut, 4.5 hours from Gouland Downs hut, or 3 hours from Saxon hut, walking east to west. Comments: Nice hut, well situated, with good views. Sleeping platforms with mattresses, toilet, water, etc. Usual 2nd night stopover for people doing the Heaphy Track in 3 nights/4 days, so can be a bit cramped when full. Resident bread-stealing wekas! |
|
Jans Where: Orongorongo River, Rimutaka Forest Park Description: DOC (8) Access: 2 hours from the Catchpool carpark. Comments: A "bush cabin" - book at the ranger's station at the entrance to the park. Ford the river straight over from the end of the Orongorongo Track and walk upriver about 100 metres. A small gap in the bush reveals a path heading steeply up to the hut. If you miss it then there is a marked "back door" track further up the river. |

Jubilee Date: 10 May 2007 Where: Silver Peaks Scenic Reserve, Otago Description: DOC (10) Access: Lots of options. Most direct is from Hightop via Devil's Staircase, 3.5-4 hours. Comments: Built 2007, this is the closest DoC hut to a city centre. No cooking/heating facilities. Becoming popular, but lots of good camping options in the valley below. |
