DETAILED INFORMATION ON THE FOUR PROGRAMS
OF THE UPANE, KA UPANE DISC
1) COUNT-M. This is an interactive drill program in the fist steps of counting in Maori. The program facilitates rapid progress by immediate audio-visual monitoring of any counting errors the student might make, plus instant confirmation of every correct counting input. The program offers three different levels of progress - counting from 1 to 20, counting from 1 to 50, and counting from 1 to 100.
2) REO-M. This program generates over 9000 basic Maori sentences and presents them on screen one at a time for the student's perusal, with or without translation, as the student (or the teacher) prefers. If the user prefers the sentences to be presented in Maori only, the computer will constantly invite the user to key in his or her own translation for comparison with the computer's, and whenever the user indicates that any particular Maori sentence has not been understood, the computer automatically generates the appropriate translation. As the model Maori sentences are presented for study in random order, each run of the program tends to begin at a different point and most elementary Maori classes can use the program quite a number of times before exhausting its usefulness.
3) REO2-M. This program is a follow-on from the program REO-M and can generate at random over 21000 basic model Maori sentences for study in much the same manner as REO-M. A wider range of sentence structures is included than in REO-M, though all the sentence structures introduced in Reo are practised further in REO2-M. Whilst it would probably be wiser most elementary Maori classes to work with REO-M first, this is not absolutely essential for a brighter class: teachers should be aware aware, however, that there is much more for students to digest in REO2-M.
4) M-CONV. This program takes a close look at the text of typical piece of basic Maori Language conversation , drilling interactively many of those vital first words, concepts and idiomatic first phrases which every beginner in Maori is likely to encounter.
