DETAILED INFORMATION ON THE 10 JAPANESE LANGUAGE TUTORIAL PROGRAMS OF THE KONNICHI WA KIT

J-1) JAPANESE BILLION. For secondary school students and others in their FIRST THREE YEARS of the language (and beyond!), this very user-friendly program makes an indefatigable tutor and study companion. Operating with a choice of THIRTY different levels of difficulty to suit the student's current state of knowledge, the program can create over 3O BILLION different model sentences of Japanese with or without translation, as the user prefers. The sentences are built up from a relatively small vocabulary and just over forty sentence patterns - as appropriate for students in their first few years of Japanese. When the student runs the program in non-translation mode to test progress, JAPANESE BILLION constantly offers to translate any sentence which is not fully understood and monitors the student's progress in this respect over each run of ten sentences. The program then makes various recommendations. In short, it is almost as good as having a real live tutor or two in your own home! If every sentence of Japanese which this program can generate were printed out, the print-out paper would go right around the world THREE TIMES - and that's not allowing for the different versions of Romanised script available in the program, nor for the Japanese Kana script - both Hiragana and Katakana! - also included in this program for those with graphics on board.
J-2) J-TRAN. This program generates random ENGLISH sentences at user-selected levels for translation INTO Japanese (from a range of many millions of different sentences). Every time the student keys in a Japanese sentence identical with the model translation generated by the computer, your computer expresses its congratulations. When the student's Japanese differs from that of the computer, the programmed translation appears on screen for the student to make comparisons. It appears not only in the Romanised script of your choice, but also in Japanese Kana - provided you have the graphics on board. Most students (young and old!) learn very rapidly this way; and... is there any teacher of Japanese who could NOT make good use of this very helpful language-instruction program?
J-3) KANA. Learning to read in Japanese Kana becomes excitement and fun with this practical drill program, which some students enjoy much as if it were a game. Both Hiragana and Katakana are included - plus a choice of Romanised scripts including the double-vowel orthography with European consonant values preferred by many N.Z. schools, the alternative macronised version of this, and also the Kunreisiki system taught in Japanese schools. The program operates at 5O different levels of progress.
J-4) J-COUNT. Counting in Japanese can be a bit more complicated than in other languages because of the two different sets of numerals from one to ten. With this program to help you step by step, however, it soon becomes an easy matter to learn to count in Japanese from 1 to 1OO.
J-5) J-ADD. For those who seek practice in both Japanese and mental arithmetic, this program provides the opportunity for both at the same time. J-PLUS invents THOUSANDS of simple addition sums at random, presents them on screen in Japanese, and calls on the student to provide an answer in Japanese - such as maybe NIJUUICHI. Makes learning fun!
J-6) J-MINUS . This program invents thousands of simple minus sums, presents them in Japanese ...and ... asks the student to answer them in Japanese. Sums are presented Romanised script and in Kana.
J-7) J-DIVIDE. For further practice in Japanese numbers, this program invents numerous simple division sums, gives them to the student in Japanese, and asks for answers in Japanese. Answers to the sums can be entered your choice of Romanised, and the program recognises standard alternatives within the ichi - ni - san series of numerals (e.g. yon and shi) as equally correct.
J-8) J-MULT. This program invents many simple multiplication sums entirely at random, displays them in Japanese, and expects Japanese answers. The sums are presented both in Kana and in Romanised. If there are any students of Japanese who went through primary school without ever really learning their times tables, this could be a second chance!
J-9) J-VOCAB. A Japanese vocabulary training program which checks the student's progress letter by letter and gives INSTANT FEEDBACK, J-VOCAB comes supplied with TWELVE standard vocabulary files which contain the majority of the words used in JAPANESE BILLION, many of which are required learning for eventual School Certificate candidates. J-VOCAB also enables the user to file new lists of Japanese words and their English equivalents to disc, ready for FURTHER vocabulary drill on the program at any convenient time! It also serves as an immediate Romanised to Kana converter, converting words entered by students in any of the aforementioned forms of Romanised script into Kana, thus instantly familiarising students with the general Kana outline of every new word they learn. It will also test students for recognition of the Kana outline - or Romanised spelling - as they or their teacher prefers.
J-10) J-LOCATE. Without the ability to express concepts of location, one is well and truly lost in any country. This program drills students in many different Japanese expressions of location. Like all the other programs on this disc, it is an interactive tutorial facility.
