Initially, everything in this range was written by home-schooling parents
for home-schooling students.
John and Rosalind Stinchcombe's two sons - Jack
and Jason, now grown up - were entirely home-schooled: they
never attended any external primary school, nor any external secondary school.
The programs in this range were written with much love and care for
the two boys in the first place. Although the general public and schools
have by now bought many thousands upon thousands of the discs produced by Educator Discs and Videos of New Zealand,
supplying computer CDs to the general public and schools actually occurred to John and Rosalind Stinchcombe
very much as an after-thought!
However, when their sons did extremely
well with this dynamic home-schooling software in terms of
qualifications gained, its wider value soon became obvious, and
its flexible and user-friendly approach is now making it of great
value to countless other home education families all around the world;
and John and Rosalind Stinchcombe now see it as one of their missions in
life to provide homeschooling families with all the support they can through this wide
range of educational computer CDs.
Like the genie of Aladdin's magic lamp, Computer in effect says:
"Master - your bidding is my command!" - and in the field of education, it
would be a very brave man indeed who could put limits on what computer can
accomplish. Computer has put at our service a totally submissive
intelligence of enormous power. Educationally, computer offers the
reward of intellectual gold by providing a broad highway to much sought
after qualifications for school-age students of either sex, an unrestricted
access route to the achievement of success for adult students, and a
refreshingly cool pathway to mental rejuvenation for the retired user.
Whatever the gaps one might have in one's education, the wealth of
programs available now provides pleasant-tasting medicine for all
schoolwork casualties - a panacea for almost all educational problems.
The intellectual treasure trove merely begins with the entertainment of
educational games designed to stimulate your mind power generally.
From there, it goes on to innumerable straight schoolwork programs
on everything from Japanese syllabaries to hot tips on how to handle
mathematical probability questions ...
A few years ago there was an idea around that computer was mainly
good for teaching Mathematics, and certainly this is one field in which
computer excels. For a human teacher to inculcate something as complex
as the time tables, for instance, calls for almost infinite patience and
ineffable good temper - not qualities for which the human race is likely
to go into the inter-galactic book of records, but qualities which
Computer possesses in abundance. Like many other parents and teachers,
John and Rosalind Stinchcombe (the Directors of Educator Discs),
originally experienced some difficulty (and that's putting matters
mildly!) when confronted with the job of teaching the times tables to
their two sons. They programmed their computer in various ways,
until they hit upon some methods that actually worked in a home-schooling environment. With this
software, their two sons soon not only gained complete mastery of their tables,
but also became downright eager for more and more Maths programs.
Programs on long-division, subtraction, simple algebraic equations,
quadratic equations, simultaneous equations, cubic equations, triangle
geometry, circle geometry, trigonometry, logarithms, etc., followed
swiftly; and it was no surprise when the two boys each took School
Certificate Mathematics successfully - one at the age of thirteen,
and the other at the age of twelve - at a time when School Certificate
in New Zealand was a Fifth Form examination, normally taken at the age
of fifteen plus! That is the kind of acceleration that computer makes
possible!
