DETAILED INFORMATION ABOUT THE ABOVE-LISTED
GERMAN SUPPLEMENT DISC PROGRAMS
GRS-1) GERMAN BILLION. For secondary school students and others in
their FIRST THREE YEARS of the language (and beyond!), this very user-friendly
program makes an ideal tutor and study companion. Operating with a
choice of TWELVE different levels of difficulty to suit the student's
current state of knowledge, the program can create over ONE BILLION
different model sentences of GERMAN with or without translation, as the
user prefers. The sentences are built up from a relatively small
vocabulary, as appropriate for students in their first few years of German.
When the student runs the program in non-translation mode to test progress,
GERMAN BILLION constantly offers to translate any sentence which is
not fully understood and monitors the student's progress in this
respect over each run of ten sentences. The program then makes
various recommendations. In short, it is almost as good as having a real
live German tutor or two at home!
GRS-2) G-TRAN. This program generates at random simple sentences in
English for translation INTO German (from a range of about TEN THOUSAND
possible different sentences). Every time the student keys in a German
sentence identical with the model translation generated by the computer,
it plays a few notes of music in acknowledgment. When the student's
German differs from that of the computer, the programmed
translation appears on screen for the student to make comparisons.
Most students (young and old!) learn fast this way!
GRS-3) G-CAL. Learning the days, months and seasons in German becomes
an easy matter with this practical drill program, which some children
enjoy just as much as if it were a game!
GRS-4) G-VOCAB. A German vocabulary training program which checks the
student's progress letter by letter and gives instant feedback, G-VOCAB
comes supplied with SIX standard vocabulary files which contain the majority
of the words used in GERMAN BILLION, most of which are required
learning for eventual School Certificate candidates. G-VOCAB also enables
the user to file new lists of German words and their English equivalents
to disc, ready for FURTHER vocabulary drill on the program at any
convenient time!
GRS-5) G-ADD. For those who seek practice in both German and mental
arithmetic, this program provides the opportunity for both at the same
time. G-ADD invents simple addition sums at random, presents them on
screen in German, and calls on the student to provide an answer in
German - such as maybe ZWANZIG. Makes learning fun!
GRS-6) G-MINUS. This program invents minus sums entirely at random,
gives them to the student in German and asks the student to answer in
German. Any student who has mastered the program G-COUNT on EDUCATOR-B,
is ready for both this program and G-ADD.
GRS-7) ARTICLES. Anyone who has ever even tried to learn German will know
that the complexities of the German indefinite article with its six forms
determined by parameters of case and gender - and even more so
the definite article, with six forms determined by the same parameters
PLUS grammatical number - often seem to present an insuperable obstacle for
some beginners. With this program to help, the challenge of mastering
these complexities can soon become rather like an exciting and compelling game!
GRS-8) G-VERB. Verbs are the backbone of the German language, and
regular verbs of the so-called weak conjugation are ubiquitous. G-VERB drills
students in the present tense of the regular weak verb.
GRS-9) HABEN. Drills students in the present tense of that very
frequently occurring German verb "haben".
GRS-10) SEIN. Of all the verbs in the German language, there is
probably none which occurs more frequently than the verb to be. SEIN
drills students in the present tense of that indispensable German verb.

"TALK GERMAN TODAY!" AUDIO-LINGUAL
TRAINING UNITS 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6
NOW AVAILABLE AS AN INTERACTIVE
TUTORIAL KIT FOR ONLY US$20.00 / NZ$25.00.
UNIT 1: Greetings and Small Talk.
UNIT 2: Finding the Way.
UNIT 3: Talking about Family and Home.
UNIT 4: Shopping.
UNIT 5: Getting to Know Someone in German.
UNIT 6: Holidays.
Fluency in greeting, making polite requests, talking about family and making
casual conversation are just a few of the many benefits students can expect
to gain from working their way conscientiously through all six units of this
course. When students have completed the course, they should also know how
to enquire about the way in German, understand directions received and explain
the way to others. They should be fluent in asking about and expressing prices,
and in making other requests and responses associated with shopping. They
should have gained all the necessary oral language skills to make someone's
acquaintance in German, and to know how to talk about holiday plans and travel.
PLUS MUCH MORE - in terms of mastering the pronunciation and idiom of modern
spoken German! The course will also help develop the user's ability to write
modern German, with dictation exercises and two-way translation drills.
HOW TO MAKE THE BEST USE OF `TALK GERMAN TODAY!'
`TALK GERMAN TODAY!' OFFERS FIVE DIFFERENT AUDIO OPERATING MODES
PLUS THREE SILENT OPERATING MODES.
THE FIVE AUDIO OPERATING MODES (WITH FULL SOUND) ARE:-
GERMAN SOUND AND TEXT WITH AUTOMATIC TEXT ADVANCE,
GERMAN SOUND AND TEXT WITH KEY-PRESS
ADVANCE, INDIVIDUAL PHRASES OF GERMAN WITHOUT TRANSLATION, INDIVIDUAL PHRASES OF GERMAN WITH
TRANSLATION INTO ENGLISH, AND INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS RELATING TO GERMAN SOUND AND TEXT.
THE THREE SILENT MODES OF OPERATION AVAILABLE ARE AS FOLLOWS:-
German Text without Sound, Translation into English without Sound,
and German Text with Translation into English without Sound.
HOW ALL THE DIFFERENT OPERATING MODES CAN GET TO WORK HELPING YOU TO BUILD UP YOUR GERMAN
|
To begin with, the INDIVIDUAL SENTENCES WITH TRANSLATION Option
offers you the opportunity of seeing both the German text and the English
text displayed simultaneously while you listen to the reading.
Use this purely to familiarise yourself with meaning of the sentences:
being read aloud. Once you are familiar with the meaning, dispense
with the simultaneous translation display, and run the program in
AUTOMATIC TEXT ADVANCE Mode.
In AUTOMATIC TEXT ADVANCE Mode, only the German text will be displayed...
Listen to the German carefully, many times, keeping an eye on the German text
and simply trying to understand as much of the reading as you possibly can.
If there are still some sections of the German which you cannot fully understand,
keep selecting the Translated Text Disply Without Sound Mode to review
the translation of the whole passage at your leisure, again and again, until you feel you
understand everything in the written text.
When you feel your understanding of the written text is complete, begin to monitor
your ability to follow the spoken German. Do this by selecting the SOUND WITH
MOUSE/KEY-PRESS TEXT ADVANCE Mode.
The SOUND WITH MOUSE/KEY-PRESS TEXT ADVANCE Mode is essentially an
easy-to operate MANUAL Text Advance Mode. YOU, the user, have to advance
the text display by key-press or mouse click to keep pace with the sound. Keep
on practising this until you are easily able to advance the text manually in pace
with the reading. By the time you have reached that stage, your aural
comprehension will have reached a sufficient level for you to be able to devote
serious attention to speech practice.
Read UNIT 1 aloud yourself, phrase by phrase, along with the computerised
reading. When that too becomes easy to you, read the passage aloud in German
without accompanying sound from the computer. To do this, select the German
TEXT DISPLAY WITHOUT SOUND Mode.
When you can handle this with ease, check yourself out on the INTERACTIVE
QUESTIONS Routine, for UNIT 1. This will deliver a different set of questions
each time you run it. Some of the questions are designed to check your auditory
recognition and understanding of spoken German, and others aim to check your
understanding of written German. Keep working at the INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS
Routine until you accomplish at least two consecutive runs without errors.
When you have thoroughly mastered UNIT 1, use the mouse to select UNIT 2,
and begin the whole process again with UNIT TWO, working with all the
various routines from SOUND WITH AUTOMATIC TEXT ADVANCE right through to
INTERACTIVE QUESTIONS - and carry on in this manner all the way to UNIT SIX.
By the time, you have mastered UNIT SIX, you will have progressed quite some
way into German talking territory!
