The Trans Tasman Late Model v Super Saloon
Challenge Series created a lot
of interest and some spectacular racing last season. Especially good was
the Kiwis win on points over the Aussies. Fans will no doubt welcome the
news that the promised return series for this side of the Tasman is on
the planning board. Once again it will be a battle of the Aussie
Late Models versus NZ Super Saloons. All going well the aim is to have
ten cars per team with the drivers that competed last season having first
dibs on a grid for March 2012.
No actual dates or tracks have been signed
up yet but expressions of interest from the organiser have been sent to
Dunedin, Woodford Glen, Blenheim, Cromwell, Wellington, Palmerston North,
Gisborne, Bay Park, and Huntly.
Long time fans willl remember the last
time a team of Australian Saloon drivers were out here, the Wow! factor
was huge and I wouldn't expect any different this time. More news on the
series will be made available as it comes to hand. |

TCVL Announces Speedway Purchase
Tauranga City Venues Limited (TCVL) announced
that it has purchased the Baypark Speedway contract this afternoon.
Chairman of TCVL, Graeme Elvin says that the
purchase of the speedway will give TCVL the ability to comprehensively
manage the whole Baypark site and will enhance the sustainability of the
venue and TCVL.
"Purchasing the speedway contract will give us
greater control and flexibility and will enable us to manage the whole
site in an integrated way. This in turn gives us a much stronger
base from which to meet the financial objectives set out in our Statement
of Intent to Council," said Mr. Elvin.
Baypark has been the home of speedway in the
Bay of Plenty since the venue opened in 2001 and TCVL General Manager,
Ervin McSweeney says that the purchase of the speedway contract won't change
this.
"Speedway as a sport has a big following and
a proud history in Tauranga and we are looking forward to working with
the speedway community to build on these aspects into the future.
"Willie Kay has done a great job running the
sport and we respect the dedication and commitment that he has put in during
his tenure. We are pleased that we have reached this agreement with
Mr. Kay and we wish him the best for the future."
Mr. McSweeney says that TCVL already has strong
event management experience but will look at bringing additional speedway
expertise on board to complement existing personnel
Tauranga City Council approved a loan to TCVL
to fund the purchase of the speedway at its meeting on 27 April.
The interest bearing loan is for a five year term.

You know the Superstock class future is bright when
you have a second generation driver not long out of Ministocks taking a
major event win from a high quality opposition field. Jason Long in the
41b won the Autumn
Nationals at Meeanee last weekend, what more can you say other than
"Wow!". 17B Aaron Ironmonger won the L&R Koru Cup for Stockcars and
272 Chris Cowling had an oopsy moment in his Saloon.
Coming up this weekend
is the Rees fundraiser at Harrisville on Saturday starting at 1pm and Kihikihi
have their final meeting of the season on Also on Saturday at 12 noon.
The weather will behave this weekend so enjoy while you can.
And a heads up to
drivers and interested parties to check the SNZ
site for the latest info regarding the upcoming SNZ AGM. Be informed
and be involved if you wish to have a better speedway organisation. |

Kihikihi is Back , back from the doldrums if
the meeting on the weekend just past is any indication of what the future
is for the struggling Waikato track. The meeting consisted of a stockcar
teams event , 4 teams took part and the Waikato Raiders were victors over
the Kihikihi Team. There was also a Streetstock teams event featuring battles
between Gisborne and Kihikihi over three heats . Gisborne won but the action
was great , streetstocks of old !. Then there was the Battle of the Sexes
in the Saloons , clean racing all day over three heats and won by the ladies(what's
with that guys?). A small field of sprintcars contested the Waikato Sprintcar
title which was won by a very rapid 22a Dean Brindle. The Rosetown Stockcar
Classic 25 Lapper was a crashfest won by 34a Mark Wearing . All this was
topped off by a demolition derby. All in all a great day of speedway on
a laid back autumn sunny saturday. There is the possiblility of a club
type day at Kihikihi on the 21st of May to end the season.

By all accounts the Speedfest meeting at Huntly last night was
an outstanding event that attracted a large crowd who were provided with
plenty of great racing and great spills. Peter Rees was rolled in both
his Stockcar and Superstock by two northern hitmen 137a Jamie Fergusson
and 71h Tony Wootton who have now claimed a rare Rees scalp each and another
rung on the Stockcar cult status ladder. Results and comment from the meeting

Christchurch driver, David Kerr was successful (Photo

the second driver to win four South Island Midgetcar titles in a row when
he dominated the 49th running of the title at Ruapuna Speedway on Saturday.
Kerr dropped just one point when winning two of the three heats and finished
second in the other to finish on 32 points three clear of Nick Donaldson
with Steve McCallum in third place on 22 points. The 37 year old now joins
Trevor Hall as the only four time repeat winner. More

Better weather this past weekend meant most speedways
got their planned meetings run although there were exceptions such as Baypark
and Gisborne and both were forced to cancel out again. The only racing
Macgor got to see was during a laid back in the sun Sunday few hours at
Rangeview speedway at Waharoa . A famous VW beetle made it's first appearance
in quite a while and although it sounded as though the cobwebs still needed
clearing there were glimpses of how quick the car could still be. |

Speedway Set to Resume
Ruapuna Speedway officials have announced that
they will conduct one further meeting before the winter break, having managed
to re-schedule the South Island Midget Car Championship for Saturday, April
9.
"Its been a tough time for everyone in the region,
and while our stadium was relatively unscathed, the emergency services
and our members have had far better things to do in the wake of the earthquake",
said Ruapuna Club President Darren Nankivell.
"We did give some thought to abandoning the rest
of our race dates, but feel that a sense of getting things back to normal
is important for us, and our supporters, officials and competitors. Although
we will be resuming once summer has gone, we will be starting that meeting
late in the afternoon."
Ruapuna does not intend to stage any winter meetings
to make up for the shortfall in events.
"We have a huge job in front of us modifying
our safety catch fence to comply by the new Speedway NZ requirements, and
need to crank up that project immediately," said Nankivell. |

The fireworks at the Superstock Teams Nationals all
came from the action on the track as this capture from a Petrol
Fumes video illustrates . Six teams fronted and battled each other
and officialdom until the predictable winners Palmerston North Panthers
trounced the Hawkes Bay Hawkeyes in the final . The Rotorua Rebels won
against the Waikato Wanderers for third place on the podium.
The meeting attracted quite reasonable crowd
numbers particularly on night two so hopefully the Teams Nationals will
once again be a permanent feature on the Waikaraka Park Calendar. |

Ruapuna Speedway officials are hoping that
they will be able to announce a resumption to racing very soon, although
it is likely that there will be just one more
meeting before closing for 'the winter'.
"We have been very mindful that so many in our
community have had a terrible ordeal following the recent earthquake, but
we have had some discussions with the controlling body and some of those
services essential to us racing and everyone agrees that we need to try
to get some 'normality' into our lives as best we can," said the Christchurch
Speedway Association President Darren Nankivell.
Nankivell said that the only meeting that is
planned at this stage will be the South Island Midget Car Championship,
and that with a big safety fence project imminent during the winter it
is not likely that other events can be slotted in.
"We have some big meetings next year that are
already being focussed on, and Speedway New Zealand have issued a new safety
fence standard that we have to meet. It will require a considerable amount
of work, and I am keen for us to get started on that as soon as possible."
The club has applied for April 9 as the date
for the Midget championship, and it is hoped that approval will be received
within " a day or two". |

The Palmerston North Panthers may have been the winners of the Enzed
Superstock Teams Champs this weekend past but the
clash between the Nelson Tigers and the Rotorua Rebels for 3rd and 4th
was the battle of the weekend and although the rampant Tigers were victorious
the rebellious Rebels were no easy beats having lifted their performance
more than a notch or two over previous efforts. The Panthers easily beat
the Stratford Scrappers in the final which by most accounts was a rather
one sided joust.

a racing rule infringement in a semi final against the Scrappers who knows

Something
a bit stunning arrived at Macgor's place this week . The
something was the Spectator site’s 2009-2010
Review publication. The sites webmaster Gregobro has a knack of writing
reviews that tell it how it was in a concise articulate fashion. This book
is basically a collection of those reviews with focus on the Stockcar classes.
The stunning aspect of this book though is the
quality. A hard cover protects glossy pages of text and some of the most
high quality photos I’ve seen contained in one single speedway publication.
I’m not going to pretend this is a cheap publication
, at $90 including postage in nz it’s not, but if you’re in the market
for something that’s a conversation piece and with quality that’s quite
likely to last a lifetime allowing you to recall the good/bad old days
and wonder where all those cars went then swing by the Spectator
site. or click the image above for direct email contact.
The one I have will be taking pride of place
on the coffee table…and no you can’t borrow
it.
Don't forget those
Stockcar Calendars either , Time is
running out if you want one for Xmas . |

The two major meetings of the weekendwere
the TWS Stockcar Teams at Huntly and the Superstock Pairs at Meeenee. The
Manawatu Steelers were the team that were tidy in appearance and execution
to take the big prize away from the Meeanee Maulers at Huntly while down
at Meeanee the Ansin & Monteith Superstocks Best Pairs event proved
a happy hunting ground for Rotorua registered drivers 16r Mark Osbourne
and 135r Scott Hewson . The fact that another two Rotorua cars in the form
of 92r Kyle Fraser and 38r Ross Asby filled 2nd place must send out a message
that the local cars will be no push over at the upcoming NZ Superstock
Champs at Rotorua in just over a months time.

Right
from the get go at Rotorua's opening it was obvious
stockcar fans will be in for a treat this season watching 81r Danian Orr
and 39r Douglas Stanaway battle for supremacy over one another. The action
dipicted in this Sportsweb
Photography shot was leading up to the finish line and the win was
taken by Stanaway. Some Hot action on a cold night probably correctly sums
up the night at Paradise Valley.
A lot of tracks ran either
opening meetings or Fireworks events this weekend. Wellington and Gisborne
were forced to cancel and Rotorua postponed a day due to bad weather just
to prove our tradional bad weather start start to the speedway season is
ever lurking. Blenheim ran a three team
stockcar teams deal with the Palmerston North sourced KB's Cowboys taking
the win. Someone at SNZ

I'm not sure if we are being lulled into
a false sense of surety but the weather has helped speedway to green flag
a great start to the new season at the tracks that have already run meetings
. Plenty of reporting with relatively few grumbles can be found on the
Discussion
Board , there are images aplenty on the Photo
Board for your viewing pleasure and one or two good reads on the Driver
Boards. To top it all off the kiwi
Super Saloon drivers are giving the Aussie
Late Models a hard time across the ditch in the Valvoline
Trans Tasman Challenge and are leading with 272 points to the
Aussies 181 . The next three rounds are this weekend starting tonight so
get yourself tuned into www.chatbox.com.au
.
Tracks to fire up this weekend will
be Waikaraka Park, Huntly and Stratford running Saturday night while Kihikihi
are doing a sunday evening number for their fireworks opener. Other tracks
are into their second and third meetings so keep up to speed with those
by checking the calendar along with the
relative track sites. The weather will be good and the action hot .I'd
still take a blanket or warm jacket though. |

The patriotic 2nz on Shane McIntyre's Super

our top Super Saloon drivers have shipped their cars to Australia for a
6 round series running against a selection of Aussie Late Models at five
different tracks.
The Series kicks off at Mildura this friday evening
and live commentary for this and the other rounds will be available on

An almost unbelievable 449 race nights
have been entered on to my Calendar pages
and while there is still more to come I figure there should be enough info
there to aid your planning for the season ahead . Remember to always check
with the tracks for comfirmations of meetings before you travel . Corrections
of any errors I have made are always welcome. |

Now the season is pretty much over the
best place to look for news and info is the Discussion
Board and if you have time to spare you can revive your memories of
times past in the 'Missing
in Action' section although be warned that once you start reading it's
very very hard to stop. Need technical help with your racer then ask a
question in the 'Tech
Talk' section . If you want to Buy or Sell cars or gear then check
out 'Speedway Ads' . |
| Don't forget the Speedway
Ads section
, times are tough so bag yourself a bargain |
| Note ! : The Archives
is a good place to look for the older items that used to be on this page |
