Many
of us attended some great speedway meetings over the Easter break ,
plenty of cars and plenty of action, even the weather was good . I myself
was fortunate to watch Rotorua's final meeting of the season , saw Stan
Hickey win his final race of his racing career and join the long list of
capable drivers who could of should of but now never will win the NZ Superstock
Championship, such is the way the finger of fate points. There was a great
retirement ceremony for Stan too with all the right words said by his son
Paul and plenty of deserved respect shown from all those in attendance
. Much as I enjoyed the meeting
in the back of my mind I couldn't shake the thought of 15 year old Samantha
Mouat losing her life while racing her 66m Ministock at Kaikohe Speedway
on Saturday afternoon . I like many others accept the danger that comes
as part and parcel of racing speedway but losing one so young really is
a hard blow to the whole speedway community. I can't begin to imagine the
grief her family is feeling right now and even knowing she died doing something
she enjoyed is not likely much comfort .
RIP Samantha Mouat. Note: A
funeral service for Samantha will be held at Baypark Speedway on thursday
8th April at 11.00 am |

48h Brent
Haynes drove like a demon all weekend in a car he
has never driven before. Haynes stuck 67w Kane Hargreaves up the wall while
Paul Hickey was telling the crowd Hargreaves had just inherited the points
lead during the final heat . Check Sportsweb
Photography for more great action shots from the World of Stocks
.
The World of Stocks meeting at Rotorua may
have been somewhat chilly for the spectators watching but the hot action
on the track more than made up for that slight downside . Often the anticipated
final heat action fails to eventuate at big stockcar meetings but that
was certainly not the case this time with the potential winner changing
almost every lap of the final as club loyalties dispatched points leaders
one after the other. At the end of it all 94r Shaun Stewart , brother of
the defending winner, came out on top followed by 46v Alan Levien and 48h
Brent Haynes . It certainly was a great event , the only negative being
that not more fans supported the meeting. Shame on us . The
Bay of Plenty Superstock Champs was hotly
contested by a 26 car field . 135r scott Hewson won from 31p Andy McCabe
and 89r/w Dale Robertson. There is a full
review and results
of the meeting on the Rotorua site .
A larger than I would have expected
field of 40 Streetstocks fronted for their Nth Island title at Palmerston
North on Saturday night . 10g Brendon Googh won from 2nz Stephen DeMalmanche
and 8w Tristan O'Donnell . At the same venue the Nth
Island solo champs was won by 9p Dylan
Hancock from 18b Jason McKay and 21a Sean Mason
At Kihikihi on sunday
New Zealand Champ Michael Pickens won the NZ Midget Grand Prix from 2nz
Angus McCloud and 77a Shaun Insley
The sweet taste of victory – it's a flavour
Grant Tregoning has certainly become accustomed to.
Tregoning added the Southland Solo Championship
title to his collection at the Russell Cunningham Properties Oreti Park

You'd have to say this past weekend has
been happy hunting for Rotorua registered Superstocks with 515r Stan Hickey
on his swansong visit to Woodford Glen's Battle of the Stocks and his best
pairs partner 19c Malcolm Ngatai topping the points table for the prestigeous
meeting. Up north two other Rotorua
Superstocks had success with 99r Mark Decke taking out the Auckland Superstock
Champs and clubmate 22r Bryce Steiner winning the Ollie Browne Memorial
race . Some good reviews from this meeting are available so take a look
at Percy's

Photography. Well what can you do except applaud their
prowness, the Wellington Young Guns went and
did it for the fifth time and the NZ Stockcar Teams Championship stays
in Wellington for another year much to the dismay of many who had been
hoping to take the battle elsewhere next season . The Wanganui Vulcans
were the team narrowly defeated in the final. Sadly once again the watching
pleasure for spectators was reduced by having similar coloured teams competing
.
Other noteworthy winners
were Modified 1nz Jamie Fox and Minisprint 3nz Shaun Cooke for their
respective Waikato Champs , 46m Terry Corrin and 56G Clive Ireland / Brendan
Weber for the Saloon and Sidecar Champ of Champs at Gisborne, 1nz Rodney
Wood won the Sprintcar Stampede at Baypark. |

Michael Pickens
picked up his third NZ Midget Champonship win
at Startford this past weekend heading the points table a comfortable four
points clear of second placed Angus McCloud who was last season's 3nz .
Michael Brunt 17k is now 3nz, the second time he has held that position
. The meeting wasn't without it's weather woes with the friday night qualifying
being rained off after a couple of races leaving the rest of qualifying
and the finals to be all run on the saturday .
1nz Rodney Wood won the Nth Island Sprintcar
Champs at Baypark followed home by 22a
Dean Brindle and 71a Jamie McDonald . The
NZ Super Saloon G.P. at Dunedin was won
by 21n Ian Burson , 891c Josh Boulton 2nd and 2nz Shane McIntyre 3rd. The
Nth Island TQ Midget champs at Meeanee
place getters were .2nz Craig Todd 1st, 14a Paul LeCren 2nd, 6b Duane Todd
3rd. |

He's been dubbed the King of Oreti Park
and speedway rider Grant Tregoning is aiming to add another crown to his
vast collection at the Southland Championships on Saturday night. For Tregoning
and his legion of fans in the deep south, it will be his last appearance
on home turf at Oreti Park Speedway this season – he's jetting off to the
UK in a fortnight to take up a contract with the Newport team in Wales...read

The
Stockcar Teams meeting at Meeanee on the weekend
that was organised as a tribute to the late Peter Barry produced plenty
of hard hitting action from the Stockcar teams and the back up classes
of Derby Teams and Ministocks were also good viewing . The Waikato Raiders
beat the Palmerston Pumas in the final although the Auckland Alleycats
can justifiably feel hard done by having beaten both the finalists in the
qualifying rounds that were run on a points system . Still a great meeting
that hopefully will be repeated and stay as a one night promotion .
If there was any real downside it was the slow
motion running of the meeting, the red light trigger happy Ref and the
lack of good info from the commentary .(click the image for video highlights).
Other results from the weekend were .
NZ Superstock G.P. 1st 7p Shane penn , 2nd 18n Shane Harwood , 3rd 14n
Dale Ewers . North Island Minisprints. 1st 2nz Daniel Thomas , 2nd
93p Declan Roe, 3rd 26h Dayne Maxwell . Both events were run at Palmerston
North . The South Island Streetstock champs
were run at Woodford Glen. 1st 86c Shane Chapman, 2nd 57c Shane Pedley,
3rd 52D Graham Morris . |
