CLIVE - THE MAN
Clive Elliott has been racing for 42 years. His Stock Car racing
career started in 1966 when he went to a Meeting and the hair on his back
stood up. He vividly remembers he wanted to "have a go". Clive
was 18 at that point, when you still needed your parents signature to race.
His first car was an original '32 Ford V8 Truck (Photo 1) which he made
into a Coupe. It still ran the original chassis and stock standard
flat head Ford V8 engine, with stock suspension, gear box and diff (Photo
2 - Racing No. 22).
Clives next car featured an ultra modern, home made steel chassis with
a 3.3 Vauxhall Cresta Engine, Dodge front axle, gear box and diff with
an Austin A55 Body (Photo 3 - Racing No. 9). This car was later re-bodied
and became 96W. He had considerable success with this car racing
for No. 2 against the World Stockcar Team, featuring a Dutchman, an Englishman,
an American and an Australian. Clive also raced this car for the
Wellington Wildcats.
The 96W car was then sold and he raced the ex Ian Taylor car 21W - beginning
of the Hemi era, which later became Clives 2ZB No. 980 Car (Photo 6).
This was arguably Clives most successful Stockcar which he raced for the
Wellington Team who were totally dominant and were unbeaten for 3 Seasons
(Photo 10 - Max Price, Peter Wood, Wilbur Chiles, Gilbert Malia & Clive
Elliott). Clive also raced the car for the NZ Team against the Aussies.
Clive retired from Stockcar racing for 12 years but made the mistake of
going to a Meeting, hence born was his current car starting as No.3 (Photo
9 & 7).
The car underwent many changes and was raced in Wellington as 98W (Photo
8) also competing for the Wildcats at Palmerston North and Tauranga.
This was at the old Bay Park Track in front of capacity crowds where the
gates were actually shut and no more spectators were allowed in.
The Wellington Team were victorious (T Mac Photo 1, 2 and 3 - Left to right

and Carl Furniss).
The last change was from 98W to 95P (Photo 11) as Superstocks no longer
raced at his home track, Te Marua.
Clives career has featured many wins, both individually and as part
of the Wildcats team. Clive was the first winner of the NZ Grand
Prix, 3 times Wellington Champ, 2 times East Coast Champ, raced for the
NZ Team twice, Member of the Wildcats who went unbeaten for 3 years.
A highlight of the 70's period was the Wildcats beating a Best in NZ Team
consisting of Kevin Free, Barry Featherston, Dave Evans, Gary Lord &
Graham Eaton (Black & White write up - Teams Race of the Season - Te
Marua). A real career milestone was when Clive won the prestigious
Pall Mall Champs.
Personality:-
Clive is a modest, really nice guy. He is a Panel Beater on wages
and has not asked for help "it has been offered".
All Sponsors and Backers of the project are proud to be involved
and greatly look forward to witnessing the "Old Fella" holding the chequered
flag next season.
