JOHN BLUNT Tony Rose D A D There was an old couple lived under a hill A D And Blunt it was their name oh, A G D And they had a good beer, an ale for to sell, G A D And did pour a wonderful name oh! John Blunt and his wife drank free of this ale Until they could drink no more oh, Then up to bed the old couple went And forgot to bar the door oh. So they a bargain, bargain made, They made it strong and sure oh, The whichever of them should speak the first word Should go down and bar the door oh. And there came three travellers, travellers three A-travelling through the night oh, And no house and no home and no fire had they, Nor yet no candle light oh. They came straightway to John Blunt's house And quickly opened the door oh, And the devil-of-a-word the old couple said Over who should bar the door oh. They went to his cellar and drank of his drink Until they could drink no more oh, And they went to his cupboard and ate of his meat Until they could eat no more oh. It's first they ate the white puddings And then they ate the black oh. The old woman she listened and said to herself "May the devil slip down with that oh." Then quickly they procured a light And quickly went upstairs oh, And then they threw the old woman out of her bed Em And they laid her on the floor. Up spoke John Blunt: "You've ate of me meat, And laid me wife on the floor oh." "You spoke the first word, John Blunt" she said, "Go down and bar the door oh!"
