"I am sure everyone has just enjoyed an absolutely fantastic weekend full of high adrenalin close-up motorsport action that only the Waimate 50 GT event can capture, from the race to the Whitehorse to the now spectacular street circuit and the new standing 1/4 mile that has proved to be one of the highlights of the weekend. For us its about the diversity of the cars that makes the event such a spectacle from historic, rally, circuit, V8 muscle and everything in-between yes GT stands for gravel and tarmac creating this wonderful array of cars unique to the Waimate event. WAIMATE 50 HISTORY

It was here in Waimate that the very first "around the houses" motorsport event was held in 1959 and remains one of only two such events sanctioned in New Zealand. Waimate has had a proud history with racing on the streets with the first Gold Star National Championship being held in the years 1959 through to 1966 when racing shifted to the new Levels Raceway in Timaru.
