Popster KRK119 CDR 22trks 64minRecorded between mid 2000 & mid 2001 on the Fostex X-28 of Megan Gallacher (BOCCTAHNE), Popster represents the first collection of new NoTV recordings for several years. Making extensive use of keyboard sounds & textures, Popster comes across as somewhat higher-tech & more arranged than Retrovision. Whereas the earlier album was often happy to call one or two tracks a finished recording, with this new release J-mz has made more extensive use of the multitrack medium - even on the most experimental pieces. A more mature & assured work, Popster's delicious experimental electronica often coalesces into actual songs, but is just as likely to dissolve into soundscape ambience or bristling noise. As the album's title suggests, J-mz's punk & electro-pop sensibilties remain undiminished - although the new NoTV recordings reveal a more thorough exploration of ambient/industrial music & a more focussed degree of formal experimentation.
