Music for Performance KRK126 CDR 2trks 59minAs its title suggests, this 4th Drawing Room release comprises a pair of extended electro-acoustic soundscapes derived from music presented live between April 2001 and October 2002. The first piece, Voices In A Room , contains drones & textures derived, almost exclusively, from voice or mic/amp manipulation. Contrasts are explored between sounds recorded "direct-to-tape" & their digitally processed equivalents. Whether the recordings are machine-based or live, acoustic media, the emphasis is on organic accident & complexity. A good example is provided by a sequence of 8 multi-tracked, live, chanted voices which play off one another to generate random patterns of harmony & dissonance. The second composition, Evolving Sequence No.2 , plays with the idea of "atmospheric" music by linking a trio of movements (appropriately titled Ionosphere , Rain & Particle Storm ) - each of which responds to some kind of atmospheric feature or condition. Along the way this piece smoothly juxtaposes atonal "space-music" & radio static with evocative, improvised piano &, finally, ferocious white noise. The music oscillates between structure & abstraction, distance & proximity, melody & dissonance.
