In Vitro No.2 KRK122 11trks 74minPeter's first In Vitro cassette album was followed by three more releases during 1995: Dust To Dust KRK043, Drag KRK051 & Seep KRK058. The best moments from these tapes comprise the In Vitro No.2 CDR. As the In Vitro project evolved an increasingly folk-noir element tempered the industrial/noise flavour of the earlier recordings. Vast aural fields of distorted guitar drones gradually gave way to sparser arrangements distinguished by clean electric (or even acoustic) guitar work. On some pieces even the omnipresent drum machine was eliminated to further emphasize the interior space & the deep introspection of the music. Gorgeous, shimmering guitar-based textures occasionally evoked the chiming music of early Sonic Youth but, if there was any reference made by Peter's new work, it was probably to the music released by Michael Gira's Swans side project: the World Of Skin between 1986 & 1988. This was music without any obvious precedents in the New Zealand context. Darkly beautiful, moody & melodic - aching with a wounded, soulful quality verging on despair. It was most definitely not pop music & constituted some of the most personal & serious music ever released by kRkRkRk. Although a few pieces from this period of Peter's work made it onto the, now deleted, Embolus & Hypostasis CDR compilations, most of this very important music has languished in limbo for many years. Peter originally intended much of the material on In Vitro No.2 to be performed by a full band (with, for example, a real drummer) & considered most of this music to be for demonstration purposes only. Remixing these pieces, in early 2002, he actually removed electronic rhythms from several songs in order to let their transfixing, folk noir essentials shine out more strongly.
