Inside Doubt KRK117 CDR 21trks 67minSome three and a half years in the making, Inside Doubt reveals a new level of sophistication & maturity in Mikel's songwriting. Indeed, songs are what really distinguish this album from its predecessor, Deformity. The cool & reflective soundscapes of that earlier work have been abandoned in favour of an irresistable train of short, punchy, electro-pop songs brimming with playful melodies & clever arrangements. Like all good pop albums, there's a dark side to Inside Doubt's shiny effervescence - not to mention many moments of soul-baring poignancy - but these enrichening features only serve to enhance the lustre of what must be Mikel's definitive work to date. Most of the compositions, on this latest Wormwood release, were initially sequenced on Mikel's PC, in the 1997-2001 period, using general midi percussion/synth sounds & homemade samples. Transferring this material to Peter Wright's Tascam portastudio in June/July 2001, Mikel subsequently added voice, bass, tremelo guitar & analogue synth overdubs in just a few weeks of feverish activity. Consequently, despite its extended genesis, Inside Doubt exudes life & spontaneity. Mastered to DAT, by Mikel & David, & thence to CDR, by David, in August/September 2001, this album stands out as one of kRkRkRk's most pristine-sounding analogue recordings ever.
