File Under Techno KRK128 CDR 22trks 48minAs its title suggests, J-mz's 3 rd full-length NoTV album shifts the focus away from song-structures & towards sequences & electronics. In common with most other kRkRkRk contributors, File Under Techno represents the entry of NoTV into the digital age with 4-track analogue recording superseded by samples & sequences constructed on Playstation & PC. J-mz both celebrates & lampoons techno-industrial music with a suite of short, catchy, largely instrumental pieces which emphasize rhythm! The dependence of many PC-based would-be composers on stock samples & effects often results in hackneyed-sounding music. However, J-mz's uniquely deviant & fertile imagination precludes any such eventuality. Easily transcending the limitations of programs like "Fruity Loops", File Under Techno ingeniously contrasts stock sounds with custom samples to produce something fresh & original. Musically, this album is a more sophisticated beast than even its predecessor: Popster kRk119. Freed from the limitations of the 4-track medium, J-mz has enhanced his basic melodies & rhythms with a multitude of flourishes & embellishments. Never before has NoTV's debt to Kraftwerk been so obvious (discerning listeners will also note shades of Skinny Puppy & Laibach) - file this under techno indeed & seriously fuck up some preconceptions in the process.
