5 KRK100 CDR 26trks 73minOriginally released on cassette in November 1992 as KRK001, 5 was kRkRkRk's second ever offering following TMA-1's mid 1992 debut: Kills Mould, Fungi & Lichens KRK000. Both albums were created during the group's first phase of activity & 5, in particular, captures the trio at the peak of their early enthusiasm for the project. Indeed, as TMA-1's most genuinely collaborative release, 5 has come to be regarded (by all concerned) with greater affection than its more focussed & finished successor Screech! For 5, in Peter's words, he & J-mz (Richard tended to mysteriously disappear during recording sessions) opted for the random recording method. This consisted of loopy rhythms, bits of pre-recorded flotsam & TV samples, feedback, odd instruments (ie: anything within reach from boots to flutes) &, occasionally, a half constructed song of the traditional musical variety. The result, for all its punk-industrial angst & chaos & for all its disintegrating guitars & broken electronics, was fundamentally a pop album - a reminder that, however serious some kRkRkRk projects would become in later years, the simple desire to have fun & to indulge oneself with music was the motivating factor originally. In latter 1999, after a considerable period in limbo, Peter meticulously remastered 5 (& contemporaneous recordings) from the original 4-track master tapes with the aid of an Apple Imac. The resulting CDR surprised all of us at kRkRkRk with its remarkable freshness & clarity. Charming, playful & anarchic, 5's inspired suite of noise, punk & madness remains the quintessential encapsulation of the label's murky beginnings.
