  The country extends about 1600 kilometers from north to
south, with two major islands,
the North (115000 sq km) and the South
(151000 sq km).
A third island, Stewart Island (1700 sq km)
lies just south of the South Island.

To the west lies Australia 2000 km away, and between
them the Tasman Sea,and to the East is the
South Pacific Ocean.

On the other side of the world, with opposite longitude and latitude, is Spain.

  Coughlan
Family

Joseph Hyrum Coughlan, born in England,
came to the South of New Zealand and settled in
the
Tuatapere area, in the South of Southland.

Wright
Family


Richard Wright , born in Scotland, came to settle in
New Zealand, starting out in Southland, but coming
to South Otago in the Owaka area,
finally settling near
Kaka Point.

  Leslie
Family

William Leslie, born in Scotland, settled firstly at
Portobello, in the Harbour of Dunedin, leaving
there in 1908 to settle in South Otago
in the
Owaka area.

HOME McKenzie
Family

David McKenzie, born in Scotland, came to
New Zealand, during the Gold Digging times
in Central Otago, then settled at
Waiwera South,
in South Otago.

  Quertier
Family

Alfred Quertier, as a 19 year old, left his Guernsey
home , (on the Channel Islands in the English
Channel), arrived in
Dunedin on the Ship "Kinnard"
in July1860, after 126 days of rough sailing from
London.
He travelled with family friends, and they brought
with them "Guernsey" cattle, and horses.
Shortly after arriving in N.Z. the gold diggings
began at Gabriels Gulley, when he bought a team
of horses, and carted loads of groceries and flour
to Gabriel's Gully, and Dunstan, ( now known as
Clyde
to and from Dunedin, and one load to
Kingston Beach.
In 1863 he purchased 200 acres of land at
Waitapeka, in South Otago, living on Guernsey
Road, farming there for 18 years, then buying land
further south at
Kaiwera. His son taking over that
farm, he then purchased Oaklands 900 acres, then lastly to
Mataura on 74 acres close to the town.

  Wilson
Family

Joseph Wilson came to New Zealand in 1863, after
Gold Mining in Central Otago, settled in South
Otago, in the Clinton Gorge area of
Slopedown.
His Son Thomas farmed at Slopedown then, bought
land in the
Greenfield area, later it was taken over
by his son George Wilson.
