Hiking the Copland Track
21 & 23 January, 2002

HOME

We had 3 great days for the weather, with no rain in sight, and with no
rain for 2 weeks previously, the rivers and creeks were running low,
which made negotation easier for us. It never got too hot, as a good part
of the hike is in the bush, which provided shade and often a breeze.

The Copland Track........
f
ollows the north side
of the Copland River.
The full length of the
track leads over the
alps to the
Mount Cook Village.

We went 17 km to the
Welcome Flat Hut, where there are hot pools.

As the first river
crossing is in the
first few minutes of
walking, (just behind
us) sooky me,
to keep dry feet,
(for a short while)
started off in sandles
till we reached the
other side of the
Rough River.

Not such a
good pic of
us with all
our shades on,
but one of
the few snaps
with a clear
view of the
mountains,
and the valley
we were
about to enter

"I think the smile might have disappeared at the sight of this bridge"

it's more
awsome
than this

appears.

"A bit of puffing going on by the time we spent 40 minutes clambering accross here"

"It was a tight fit with a pack on, so the rest of us took our packs off to get through here"

    There were some
tricky spots -
like this

"A bit of courage was needed intitially, but by the time we returned, we became more
confident at hopping accross these boulders with water racing around them"

many side

"I can tell you,
it was a welcome sight to see the roof of this hut appear from amongst the bush"

"This was quite a steep haul,
especially with strained knees from the hike in 2 days before,
the chain was well received......but we still smiled !!"

    After crossing
McPhee Creek,
a steep climb was
required, with
the assistance of a
chain to pull on.

HOME         With packs off,
we took a short
walk down a
side track to
view a rock shelter.

    More rocks to
negotiate
while on the
Copland Track.
We didn't get to see
the snow capped
mountains very
often, as the clouds
hung low most of
the time.

"The Pools were most Welcome, after hiking in, and the next day too,
to relieve aching limbs - hopped out of them feeling good again"

    One of the
Hot pools
that is a
safe
temperature
to soak in.
This one has
as fine gravel
bottom.
There is one
main pool
which is the
source of the
hot bubbling
water, and
4 other pools,
but only two
are suitable
for soaking in.

HOME
    This pool is
shallow,
and has a
light green
silk mud
bottom.
These pools
are just the
place to
soak in after
a long hike.
