This set was based on the original set. The stonework chimney piece was in fact a door covered with polystyrene and tissue paper (in this case TOILET PAPER – unused!) which hid the permanent ladder used to get the Fiddler on and off the roof. The roof slates were made of small carpeting squares which were again covered with tissue paper. Most of the timber was real timber with only a few boards painted by a helper who had never done this kind of work before. They were indistinguishable from the real thing.I am very proud of my painting of most of the rest of the set – especially the inside of the kitchen and all the exterior surfaces. Most of the props, including Tevye’s cart made by my father, came from Auckland Music Theatre. The manual winch in the last
picture was the driving force for the revolving stage which was an integral
part of the show. Strangely, the
operators were always tired after the curtain calls, which involved a L-O-N-G
sequence where the entire cast was onstage and the revolve kept turning.
