Dragon/Manaia

Carved from a block of solid whale jaw bone, this piece measures 75mm high by 80mm wide and 28mm deep. The Manaia end has hand-turned paua cabachon eyes and the dragon end has red glass eyes with gold centers.

Commissioned by a private collector who is of Maori and Chinese extraction. Hand carved from whale bone by Maori sculptor, Len Kay, Whangarei, New Zealand, 2001. 

Tuatara 

Hand carved from NZ deer coronets and set on a carbon-dated swamp kauri  or mallee root burr base. Has hand-turned black coral eyes.
A signed, limited edition carving.  Tuatara range in size from 17 cm to 25 cm long.

 

 

Kotuku

"He kotuku rerenga tahi"
A white heron is a bird of one flight 
(a rare visitor).  

Kotuku carved from one deer coronet and mounted on a driftwood (shown) or swamp kauri base.  A signed, limited edition carving.  Approximately 8 cm high by 10 cm wide. Cast reproductions are available - the heron is sterling silver and the base is patina bronze.

The Challenging Warrior

Actual carving is approximately the size of a small woman's hand.  Private collection Whangarei, New Zealand.  Carved from a single deer button and modeled after the image on the reverse of the NZ pre-decimal shilling coin.

Buddha and Kuan Yin

Buddha carved from a single deer button; Kuan Yin from 3 buttons. She is standing with her foot on a dragon's head with glowing red glass eyes. She holds a pearl between her fingers, a lotus scepter on her left arm and wears a diamond at her throat.

Taurapa

Taurapa or Maori war canoe (waka) stern post. Carved from beef bone, this piece measures 120mm high by 40mm wide by 5mm thick.  This carving will be used to make a mold for reproduction in glass to feature on the stern of a glass waka made from slumped glass. Private commission. Carved by Len Kay, Whangarei, New Zealand, 2001.
