Manaia are characterised by their often bird-like features and whispy limbs. They are featured side-on and in Maori carved whares (meeting houses) or wakas (war canoes) they are attached to other features as protective elements.

Occasionally a large deer button allows the creation of double manaias such as the one to the left. 

The manaia to the right is the "Time Traveller" - it spans time because it has one foot in the future and one in the past.
