Funny Stories . . . . .

Pacific Carvers has on occasion been asked to carve some unusual things - not just unusual designs such as replicas of vintage motorcycles (we suggested that the requestor look for a model kit at the local hobby shop), guitars (the regular guitar with inlaid paua was cute, but we declined to carve a replica of an electric guitar) and all manner of skulls, etc.

But some people have offered some unusual materials as well. Take for instance, the lady that wanted the fangs of her much-loved and now deceased German shepherd carved into pendants or earrings to wear.  How did she get them out?  The mind boggles.

Then, of course, there are the human bone stories - yes, we were asked to carve the extracted knee bone of a man who had just had knee-replacement surgery.  We reassured him that we thought that such a souvenir was best kept in it's natural state (if at all!).

A student who spent quite a bit of time at our studio decided one day to carve a minature elephant's shoe - complete with eyes for laces and a red velvet insole.  He carved it for a woman whom he cared about very much and said only that it was "private joke" between the two of them.  We didn't pry.

A carver friend once made a bone carving for her dog - and, yes, the dog ate it!

We've made game pieces (including two sets of bone checker pieces), repaired antiques - such as ivory chess pieces, bone hands on cuckoo clocks, bone tusks on ebony elephant sculptures, and we've made specialty items - such as a connector piece for a bag pipe, a bridge for a guitar and all manner of one-off hand carved items.
