Te ekara 0 Aotearoa (The eagles of New Zealand)

Carved from a single Wapiti deer button, this pendant represents bi-cultural Kay relationship. Whakairo (carver) Len Kay is Nga Puhi, one of the larger Northland Maori tribes of Aotearoa (New Zealand). Candy was born in Paha Sapa (Black Hills of South Dakota) and has distant ties to the Lakota People. This carving represents their two different cultures and personal union. It visually expresses a similarity of beliefs, spirituality and mythology. Manaia (carved bird-like images) are believe to be the keepers or guardians of spiritual energy - combined with the eagle image which is revered amongst North American Indian tribes.  The eyes are hand-turned paua cabachons

"He who sees the morning star shall see more, for he shall be wise - and his thoughts shall rise as high as the eagles." Black Elk, Lakota Holy Man.
