HISTORYThe German Shorthaired Pointer is a handsome versatile Gundog developed in Germany during the Seventeenth Century for the sportsman requiring a gun dog that would excel in all phases of Gundog work, he was known as the Dautsch Kurzhaar. The criterion for this all round dog was that he would hunt and find game, be steady on point, retrieve tenderly on land and water. He shall have the will and ability to destroy predators and be strong enough to pull down a stag or a boar. They did this by selectively breeding only from the best workers from the best hunting strains. They bred for function; form followed function to produce the clean present day type. The Germans used the hounds that were available at that time, such as the St Hubert Hound and the Gascon Hound with the Old Spanish Pointer, some say the BloodHounds were introduced but this is debatable. The first German Pointers reached the USA in there 1920's they were soon established as a very popular sporting dog and family pet. The first German Shorthaired Pointer came to the UK after WW2 brought home by returning troops. The RAF imported some to be used as guard dogs. NZ saw its first import in 1957 from the UK followed by dog's form the USA, UK the Continent and Australia so we now have a variety of bloodlines to bred from. Since 1957 the German Shorthaired Pointer has become a very popular and much prized Gundog working in the field and competing very favourably in trials, shows, obedience, agility, a really excellent Gundog and family friend. My Dogs
