Bunkdown Lodge is tucked down a right of way off the main highway north 500 metres from the Information Centre and only a 10-15 minute walk to the city centre.

Homely accommodation for 24 guests that is warm, clean and spacious

We loved the house, turned it into a backpackers in late 1998 and discovered Whangarei in the process

A word of advice for travellers - if you are looking for backpacker accommodation in New Zealand pick up a BBH Guide. It describes over 340 hostels in New Zealand from the Far North to Stewart Island in the south to assist you in choosing a hostel that best suits your needs. Not only does it have some handy hints for travellers but it is FREE!! We also recommend buying the BBH Club card to take advantage of discounts on bed rates, bus travel, activities and services.

The best way to explore Whangarei is by car - check out Pegasus (just around the corner from our hostel). If you are staying in NZ for a few months consider buying one.
