17. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE UNIVERSE?
Purpose
This multi-dimensional world view shows a universe with purpose. It is simply a matter of logic that any purpose that applies to the universe as a whole also gives a purpose to everything in it. We will be able to know the purpose for our lives and everything around us.
The opposite is also true, that if the universe had no purpose as a whole, there would be no purpose for anything in it. If there was no purpose in the universe we would be wasting our time to try and find a purpose for our own lives.
What evidence is there that there is purpose in a multi-dimensional universe?
1. It is in the nature of knowledge to have purpose. Because of the existence of the knowledge dimension our universe has purpose. Random information is not really knowledge. Over a large number of random events we may get the average result, but although this becomes information, it does not offer us any knowledge about what the next result will be. The alternative of random information is designed information which has a purpose for what the design is intended to accomplish. If I am building a house I will cut the timber for the framing to the a specific length to fit the plan. This is applying knowledge to the length of timber. But it also applies purpose which is to build a particular house.
2. We do have a sense of purpose in us, which would be expected to show up in a purposeful iniverse. You only need to look inside of yourself to see whether you have any sense of purpose.
I am not saying that your particular sense of purpose is necessarily in tune with the purpose of the universe, just that if you have any sense of purpose at all is evidence of purpose in all.
- If you sense that you have a purpose for what you are doing today,
- if the business that you work for has a purpose statement,
- if you have something you are looking forward to in the future,
- if you have ever imagined what it would be like to win a huge lottery,
- if you desire to learn more about anything,
- or if you hope to become even a little bit better person,
3. Just as purpose for us comes from our mind, so also purpose for the multi-dimensional universe comes from the mind or spirit dimension. The nature of multi-dimensionality is that each added dimension adds a new capacity to the universe, and it is the knowledge and spirit dimensions that adds the capacity of purpose to the whole system. The reason why humanism doesn't detect purpose in the universe is because it has ommitted from consideration the dimensions that produce that purpose.
4. Yes I did mention a desire to win a lottery. Actually chance and purpose are mutually exclusive explanations of the universe. If the universe came about by chance, then there wouldn't be a purpose. But what chance could produce a universe that has come to have all the right information in it? What chance could start with and unfold seven beautifully interlocking dimensions? Multi-dimensionality provides an alternative explanation than chance for the existence of our universe.
5. Advances in understanding that we live in a designed universe also show that it is a purposeful universe, made to be suitable for us to live in and also suitable for us to explore in.
God has put purpose into the universe. He has also made us to seek for that purpose.
Freedom
The nature of dimensions indicate their purpose. Just as this universe was created to be suitable for life, and for us to live on a planet where all the necessities of life are provided, the dimensions have been given to us for the same reason. In particular dimensions allow us freedom. They give us freedom to exist.Spatial dimensions allow us freedom to move. Time allows us freedom to continue to live and to achieve a purpose in the future. Mass-energy allows us freedom to work with things and relate with others. Knowledge allows us freedom to explore and learn, understand and feel, remember and plan, and to choose and decide. Spirit gives us the beautiful freedom to love and be loved, to know what is true and right, and to have a purpose in life.
Each dimension gives greater freedom than previous dimensions. Because we live in a world with a growing knowledge dimension, we are enjoying growing freedom with it.
The aim of Jesus' ministry was for personal freedom as he explained in his ministry vision statement, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has chosen me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed and announce that the time has come when the Lord will save his people." [Luke 4:18-19]
The limitations of life are like prisons that inside of us we know are not meant to be there. Growing dimensions and additional dimensions will open up our life to greater freedom that is the purpose of God for us.
The end result will be for us to share with God himself in all of his awesome omni-dimensionality. There is no greater freedom that that.
What about evil?
The danger of freedom is that in the choices we make we can work against the very freedom and purpose that we are made for. Evil is whatever takes away or destroys our freedom and purpose. This does not include the limitations of life. They do not work against us, but are the road we must travel. It is traffic going the wrong way on the road that is evil. Evil is what works in the opposite direction to the purposes of God. It may be evil in us that we call our sin, or from around us in the form of sin against us.Evil will express itself in different ways in different dimensions. Evil is there in the spirit realm as well, and that is where evil originates, just as God's revelation of love, truth and goodness comes from the spirit realm.
Paul explains it, "At that time you followed the world's evil way; you obeyed the ruler of the spiritual powers in space, the spirit who now controls the people who disobey God." [Ephesians 2:2]
Freedom gives us a choice in the end to follow either the purpose of the universe as has been revealed by the one who has designed and created it, or be deceived into choosing our own way which will be working against the purposes of God.
Putting it into a nutshell
At the beginning of the universe all the dimensions were there in God. It was and is his purpose for us to share with him in those dimensions. Creation was an unfolding of some of his dimensions to form the universe for us to live in. But it hasn't finished yet. He has come into the world as Jesus Christ to show us the purpose of the world, and demonstrate in his miraculous ministry and in his resurrection that there are more dimensions for us to enter into. His purpose has been revealed through some people throughout history and we have that purpose in his Word. There is more. Jesus will come again one day to complete the process, and allow the opening up of further dimensions for us. Eventually heaven and the universe will be able to completely unite.Paul says “Yet there was the hope that creation itself would one day be set free from its slavery to decay and would share the glorious freedom of the children of God.” [Romans 8:21-22] Although God has created us with our limited dimensions, his plan is that we would one day be free to go beyond those dimensions. As children of God we should share God’s greater dimensions.
Fulfilment of human life in our universe is founded on enjoying the freedom of its dimensions that are preparing us to live life in an even greater number of dimensions.
Where does that leave you?
You can choose now to share with God in his purpose for the universe. Now is the moment for your choice. How about making that commitment to God? Would you pray the following prayer with me?"Father God, you are awesome. I commit my life to you and your purpose for all people and the universe. Thank you for putting me in a universe that is your gift to me. Thank you for coming as Jesus Christ to die and rise for me. I now turn away from my ignorance and pride that has led me to oppose your purpose and give myself totally to the purpose that you show me. I open my heart to the working of your Spirit, so that I will receive all the abilities and freedom that come from beyond the dimensions of this world, that I need to serve you. And I will share with all of your people to carry out this work."
So go to it! I leave with you this word from God, "For I loved the universe so much that I gave my only Son Jesus, so that as you believe in him, you will not end up a purposeless heap of dust, but enter into the greater and eternal dimensions of my life." (my version of John 3:16)
