Versus North Shore Dad's Army, 31 Aug Rally day at Takapuna, with all the President teams (except
the losers who stay away or book their Rugby trip at this time of the year) turning out. We got to play
Dad's Army who were all fired up for a serious game - we weren't, and I was hoping to play prop as the
backs were supposed to swap with the forwards. I wanted to give my hammy a rest. We got the jump on
them with our stylish hawaiin shorts upsetting their concentration as the brightest pair on the field
worn by Lane, our dynamic fullback for the day, ran in the first try after turning up all over the field.
This got Dad's Army fired up as they ran in two tries pretty quickly. We came back with a kick thru
by our Hellensville ringin Charlie, who beat the ball to the deadball line by a smidgen. Our third try
was a little lucky as I thought our flanker Larry had knocked the ball down from the opposition number
eight as he went to feed the halfback off the back of the scrum - but you play to the whistle and he
scored from it. Second half came with a try by the opposition leaving us one conversion up on them,
must have been that bloody difficult conversion by Johnny, from 10m out straight in front! We eventually
got the break on them by the speed, agility and style of AJ as he put up a bomb on our 40m, raced up
to grab the bouncing ball that Army didn't want and ran 25m across the field to score in the opposite
corner. Mine was the last try, I was on the end of the chain as Mark flipped the ball onto me before
the last defender went in to hit him, I only had to stroll 10m to make the line where I was able to run
around to the posts. Lori showed us why he doesn't kick conversions as the ball didn't get off the ground
and only just made it between the posts.
Versus Waitakere, 24 Aug Suppose to have been a
bye for us, but we ended up with a game against an Auckland pressies team, who showed us a few moves
in the backline to topple us 4 tries to 2. great reffing from Massey in the first half and Malaki in
the second.
Versus North Shore Whales, 17 Aug Didn't make this game as I was at a 40th but
hear the boys played a blinder to win. Notable for the bet between Lori, James and Soljy - $50 in for
the first of the trio to score a try (Soljy must have been on the turps last night, was a sure bet not
to score, he hasn't for about 3 seasons!!) James was running to the line about to be tackled, Lori gliding
up on his side so James decided to hold the pass and wait for another support player to pass to. Said
support player arrived to swing the ball along ... to Lori, easiest $100 he made as he flopped over the
line.
Versus buggered if I can remember Haven't updated for a while and my alzheimer has
kicked in, can't remember the last couple of games, probably had a bye for all that I can remember!!
We lost no doubt!
Versus Northcote Nobras, 27 Jul Another game against the Nobras, believe
the boys were leading into the second half but couldn't keep it up. Better game than last time when
we got dicked.
Versus North Shore Evergreens, 20 Jul Home game and after another week cancelled
due to wet weather, we still couldn't muster any more than the bare fifteen, and that was after I was
conned into doing the reffing. I was trying to give my buggered knee a rest! All we can say about the
Evergreens is that they were too big, too powerful and too fast for us, as they powered to a 44-7 win.
Our try came off a chase of the loose ball which the opposition couldn't control from 5m out, one of
our boys picked up the loose ball and strolled across the line. Charlie received Dick of the day for
turning up with one boot, don't think he was that worried about not playing though. Johnny was our recipient
of player of the day, and proud he was too - see the photo's!
Versus Navy Water Rats, 06 Jul
Off to Ngataringa Bay and as usual at this time of the year, she's a swamp. The Navy were able to supply
us with a few players to make up numbers, so the game was on! The Water rats were to dominate the game
most of the two halves, their forwards able to control and drive the ball forward - we managed to get
a couple of tries in at the end, thanks to our Navy ring-ins. Our "moments" included the dick of the
day award to Gary, who under pressure kicked the ball directly out into centre field for the opposition
to stroll over for a try. The 16 year old son of a Water Rat, who was kicked the ball at the halfway
mark, he set sail for the try line, dummying a kick, swerving and stepping a few players including his
dad on his way to the tryline - she was a little beauty! Not one try was converted today (not that I
count them), as no one could get the ball off the deck, Navy win six tries to two.
Versus Kaukapa
Kowboys, 29 Jun The neighbours came to play, but only with about ten players! Some of their team
had been playing for us over the past weeks as their games were canned, so we surprisingly turned up
with subs on the side and they had to borrow some of our senior C's to play for them. Seeing those youngsters
on their side made our chances of winning seem slim, but a muddy field is always a great leveller! The
first half was spent around the centre of the field, a kick through to Jase our wing saw him racing tho
the tryline outsprinting the opposition, but he didn't have faith in his soccer style so dropped on the
ball about five metres out, our centre Bruce was the first of our team there, he picked up the ball and
scored .... on the five metre line - if he had have been around at the aftermatch, I would have awarded
him dick of the day! Jase was to score the first try of the day, when "dirty Harry" called for the ball
from the opposition player who out of the goodness of his heart passed it to him, for Harry to race towards
the tryline from about thirty out, as usual, the old legs failed him so he had to pass it on to Jase
to score. In the second half they were able to charge down a kick from Murray (he was awarded dick
of the day for that) which I managed to cut the opposition out just on the line to stop them scoring,
but in the ensuing five metre scrum their No.8 in the scrum (the KKK team jerseys all have No. 8 on them)
came barreling off the back and my attempt to stop him was about as useful as any Pom trying to tackle
Jonah. We were to get two more tries to win the match, a penalty about 15 metres out saw the ball swept
right across the field to see Jimmy's deaf mate Garry, playing his first game for the team, scoring in
the corner. Our final try was scored by our Pommy ring-in Rick over on exchange with the Royal Air Force,
believe he plays halfback for the RAF Rugby team. He showed his skills throughout the game, making Harry
step further and further back from the scrum as he had a real halfbacks pass, unlike Dougy's pass which
is as limp as a gay blades wrist! I managed to get on the end of a pass from a Bruce break, tried to
step around the last line of defence but couldn't, found Rick running in support to score. He earned
player of the day for his efforts around the field.
Versus Marist Bluebellies, 15 Jun Shitty
day, shitty weather, on a shitty field in shitty conditions - but hey, we got to play!! She wasn't a
great day to be a sideline supporter, as both teams couldn't catch a cold let alone the ball. Marist
deserved the win as they played the game in our half all day long, we made only the odd raid into their
half, then would drop the ball and give it back to the opposition. By the end of the game the field
was an inch deep in mud all round and we all had the same coloured jerseys... and the Bluebellies had
scored twice. Thank god the showers were hot and the beer was cold.
Versus Massey Maulers, 08
June Great day for a game of rugger, cool day but the sun was shining and not too much wind. We
even turned up with enough players, being a local derby and not having to play last week (Prezzies don't
play rugby on long weekends, they have other things to do!) meant the injuries were down. The game itself
was hard fought, and with the help of the ref (thanks Tony) was played in great spirit, unfortunately
the Mauler spirit remained higher than our own. AJ was to score a good openside flanker try, following
up the backs to be popped the pill with 15m to run into the tryline. Malaki was to score our other try,
which was a very slow motion try, ball making its way through half the teams hands as it wend its way
across field - by the time it got out to Malaki we had an overlap, so he stepped inside his outsides
to give them a chance! Massey scored 3 tries to our 2 so were the victors on the field (and off field
as their infamous Massey Muller wine was bought out for the opposition player of the day Mark, and the
homemade Bourbon also made an appearance at the aftermatch - cheers guys) Douggy was our P.O.D. and a
player who didn't make it to the field, Murray, received Dick of the Day as it was thought he may need
to be inspired by the trophy, he was silly enough to get a vasectomy during the Rugby season, and was
feeling a little sore!
Versus Northcote Nobras, 25 May Lots of wind and some heavy rain
during the week, but the grounds were in good nick. We arrived short of players again, so had to call
on a few Nobras to help out. The first half was a disaster, they ripped us apart as their nippy backs
and hard charging forwards slipped through some fairly lousy tackling - 4or 5 tries being scored in the
first half. The second half was far better as we shored up the forward pack with some hefty borrowed
players from Northcote. We were to "win" this half as we scored three tries to their two. The first
of our tries went to our borrowed prop, who picked up from 10m out and bumped the opposition off to score.
He was our opposition player of the day as he had many rampaging runs, bumping players off left, right
and centre with ball in hand. Our second try was to another borrowed player, ball was swung along the
backline to Murray who ignored the fullback out side him (again) and cut the gap to hand the ball to
the flanker on the inside who strolled 10m to score. Final try was mine, breakdown midfield from about
40m out. Picked the ball up from the back of the ruck, skirted around the outside, saw a couple of props
in front of me, decided they could be stepped, straightened up and headed for the tryline to beat the
cover - easy!! Harry let me have POD for that. Our dick of the day went to Soljy, whose clearing kick
from our scoreline went directly to our winger AJ diagonally across from him. He nearly went on to score
if his butter fingers hadn't stopped the move! Soljy claimed it was planned, yeah right.
Versus
Silverdale Snails, 18 May Played my first game since wrecking the knee last year, so my recall may
not be too hot. The Snails did win what was a fairly tight game, 19-12 was the final score. Can't remember
who scored for us but I do remember they had a NZ over 35 touch player in the backline, Rikki, we gave
him our player of the day as he showed us how to use speed to great affect, going around our backline
and scoring in the corner. Simon did "touch" him on the way to score, but for some reason he didn't
stop after the touch!! We also lost another player today, Duncan Dwight decided to do an Anton Oliver,
snapping his achilles, now he'll be out for at least 8 weeks.
Versus Glenfield Grizzlies, 11
May Great day for a game, the Grizzlies turned up with heaps of players on the sideline, and we had
some reserves for the first time also. Some of the old guard were back, the Farley brothers and Mark,
to tidy up our pack and backline. Grizzlies were to score two excellent tries in the first half, the
second a set move off a penalty from about ten metres out. Not a common sight in the Pressies, a move
being called and actually executed to perfection! The game was to move up and down the field all day,
with great running and great defence, worth the admission fee. We had our chances, the one that got
away went to Stan, who had the ball stripped from his hands as he dropped to score well over the tryline
- he was awarded with the dick of the day for this, although Rod must have been a close call, he received
the yellow card halfway through the second half. Our one and only try was a Hec special in the second
half. He was to break through in the centres at about the 60m out and set sail for the corner flag -
his ugly shorts probably mesmerised the opposition! Grizzlies were to score the final try, a little
pearler that had the forwards driving down one side then switching to the backs to give the flying fullback
a try in the opposite corner. It was a great game to watch, and good to see an ex maori All Back (and
good Northland Taniwha lad) on the field also.
Versus East Coast Bays Rebels, 04 May Away
game where there wasn't a great turnout of players. Too wet for me but the report back says it was a
dicking (more than 60 points against us), although a few were scored by us in the second half. Rod was
to feature in the first major injury to one of our players this year, chipped elbow, but not to Rod.
Nope, he decided to take out Prings!! So to all players, watch your back when Rod is chasing down the
opposition, give him lots of room, or you may suffer the consequences.
Versus Massey Livewires,
27 April Home game at last, no rain to cause us problems, but the rain during the week had softened
the ground up enough to lower the height of the tackling. The Livewires arrived with only ten players,
so we divvied up a few of our players and got on with the game. The Livewires were to be hammered as
we ran in more than ten tries to their two. Believe Mouse, Prings and Rikki were to score hat tricks.
The more memorable tries were: The try to Hec when Duane broke away from the opposition and rumbled
about 40m across and up the field eventually linking up with Hec who scored in the corner. Prings breakaway
up the middle, with Duncan Dwight hanging with him all the way to the tryline hoping the pass would come
- it didn't...especially as it was the hat trick try! Dunc didn't deserve it as his defence was shite
all day, eh Dunc, you know. Johnny was to score a try today also, he hung in like Dunc also, and waited
patiently before pouncing onto a well weighted kick over the tryline, the fact that there wasn't any
opposition to be seen for fifty metres as they had given up doesn't diminish the sheer determination
by our Johnny to score it! His conversion from right in front hit the upright and didn't go in - typical.
Versus Takapuna Turtles, 20 April Played at the Hato Petera grounds on a very sunny Autumns
day, ground as hard as concrete, so scoring was high and tackling was high also, no one wanted to skin
themselves! Lots of tries scored and the first few were to the Turtles, first to their winger who showed
a clean pair of heels to leave Simon sprawled on the ground wondering where he had gone. The next was
courtesy of Harry, a perfect pass to the opposition from 25m out for him to stroll in under the posts
untouched - Harry was to feature in a few more tries later on, both for and against! This was to earn
him dick of the day. Our tries were scored by Duane, his first in ten years earning him man of the match,
a storming run from 20m out (probably 50m out by the end of tonight). Jase was to score a long ranger
from 40m, Steve, a ring in from Takapuna scored two beauties, sidestepping and busting through. Doug
and Simon made up the other two tries. Final score was 36 all, 6 tries each. Prings was to earn the
opposition player his dick of the day as he ran him down and tapped the ball from his hands.
Versus
Hellensville Bulls, 13 April Travelled away to Hellensville for the local derby between ourselves
and the Bulls. Our team was short in the beginning so a few of the Bull reserves joined in with us.
It was fine day with no wind, so no excuses about slippery ball today. The Bull's forwards were to
dominate the day with big drives and hard tackling. It did'nt take them long to score their first try
of about six during the match. Our boys did get to score some goodies, especially one of Malake's cousy
bro's who was running full speed at the line doing a Jonah Lomu impression. Once the ball spread along
the backline, there was room outside. Harry unfortunately ended up on the end of a line move with more
than 60m to run, something that 50 yr(?) old legs do not attempt - and that was the case today as the
younger mob mowed him down. Hec bagged the first try which was a solo, tip toeing down the sideline
to eventually score in the corner - absolutely knackered he was too. The other try went to Jase Morgan,
a slick backline move with the final pass allowing a sprint by the winger to the line. We must mention
our Irish ring-in from Hellensville, the local publican who was having his first game of Rugby (in NZ
I think). He started the game by running backwards, but by the end of the match was chipping, passing
and running like a true President!!
Versus North Shore Evergreens, 06 April Our manager
Johnny Butcher promised (well attempted to promise) us a home game against a team that would be more
social than us - and who do we get but the Evergreens away!! We have had many games against this team
with very few wins, and the Evergreens always promise a tough and uncomprimising game. It was a squally
wet winters day, so I stayed away!! But the boys did play some pretty good wet weather rugby to go down
three tries to one.
