1. Introduction

1.1. About this faq

This is not so much a FAQ at this stage, more like a place which I hope you might be able to answers my questions and questions anyone else have about this wonderful car. There is so little information out there, whatever info I do get I will put here. It is hope eventually this will be built up into a proper FAQ document about the Glanza.

This document was created on 4th February 1999 by BH Keng. It will eventually be a FAQ written by readers of this FAQ worldwide. It is your FAQ, so please contribute any information you have.

1.3. Model History

Pre-1990

Built to deal with the 'hot hatch' craze the Starlet Turbo (EP71) was introduced sporting a 1.5 litre 12 valve engine with a power output of 115hp. Weight was only about 790kg which gave it an impressive power to weight ratio.

1990-1991

In 1990 the Starlet GT Turbo (EP82) was released. A new shape was given to the Starlet, more modern. It has a dual mode turbo, a smaller engine boasting more horsepower than its predecessor, and a more aggressive look. It had a 1.3 litre DOHC 16 valve 4 cylinder engine. The two mode turbo allowed the driver to change boost levels. On low mode only 115hp was available cutting down on petrol consumption while normal mode unleashed a healthy 135hp for spirited performance. Interior improved over pre-1990 model but still looks very cheap with plastic and vinyl interior. Power steering and power windows.

1992-1993

Popularity of the Starlet GTs hit its high around this time. Optional airbag and ABS brakes. Interior styling made more modern. Climate control available as an option.

1994-1995

During its production run the GT underwent the typical Japanese facelifts maturing with each. This was the most noticable facelift given to the Starlet which has twin round lights. These do not seem very common.

1996-1997

In late 1995 Toyota's focus changed. Toyota spun off the performance oriented Starlets into their own body styles and names. They released the Glanzas (EP91). It was more upmarket than previous models. It has modern interior styling. White dials on dash and power steering/windows, all electrics, climate control, airbag and ABS brakes. The Glanza is available in two flavous the S and V. Glanza S has 115hp 1.5 litre 16 valve engine. The Glanza V has a 4E-FTE 133hp 1.3 litre turbo DOHC 16 valve engine.

1998-????

The Glanza still has the same shape but the front bodykit has been given a better meaner styling. Otherwise it is still the same as the 1996 model.

1.4. Sourcing Parts

If you need parts to either upgrade your car or replace components then there are a few well known brand name 3rd party car part manufacturers. Examples are TRD, TOMS and THRUST

In New Zealand, they can be purchased from:
Sollitt Trading: www.trd-parts.co.nz
Advanced Imports: www.advan.co.nz

2. Specifications

The Toyota Starlet Glanza V is a 1.3 litre 2 door hatchback Turbo. It is part of the Starlet line but the Glanza shape was first released in 1996.

3. Questions

If you know answers to any of these questions, please send me an email at bhkeng@ihug.co.nz, if you have questions of your own, let me know and I will add them to the list.

Is the Glanza still being made today?
Good question, does anyone know if it is still being produced in Japan?

Is it official that the Toyota Echo is the replacement for the Starlets?
In Australia and New Zealand, yes, the Echo is the replacement for the Starlets. Australia and New Zealand does not produce any Glanza's locally. However what, if any, car will replace the high performance versions of the Starlets? (ie Glanzas). Elsewhere in the world, does anyone know?

Other questions:

  • Where can I source Glanza bodykits? <--please!!
  • Does anyone have any official figures of the length/width/height of the Glanza?
  • What is the stock standard exhaust size for the Glanza?
  • What is the first mod that you would do to a Glanza to give you the best price/performance improvement?
  • What are the official/unofficial figures for 0-100kmh and 0-400m figures for the Glanza?
