Greytown -    PHILLIPS  - 
A large fire took place at Greytown last night.  The premises of Mr Phillips, clothier was burnt down.  The Telegraph & Court House narrowly escaped.


Monday  4 April 1870  -
W.G.DORSETT

The remains of the late Mr W.G.Dorsett, were yesterday buried in the Church of England Cemetery.  The deceased was an old mason, and a master of the
St Augustine Lodge and filled up to his death the Office of Tyler to the Grand Lodge and therefore buried with Masonic honours.

  -   It is with very deep regret we announce the death of Mrs Jacobs,  wife of the Very Rev. Dean of Christchurch,  which took place on Saturday.

Auckland  -
TOLMIE
  -  A man named James Tolmie, was killed at Port Charles,  by the rolling of a log and 2 other men LOUIS  & KINGSTONE were seriously injured.


Tuesday 12 April  1870
Hokitika -  
JEWELL  -    A carrier named William Jewell was killed by a gunpowder explosion near Mansfield.  His dray and horses were destroyed.


Wednesday 13 April  1870
Death  - 
JOHNSTON
   -  The death of Mr James Johnston,  builder,  who died on Monday last, aged 63.  Mr Johnston was an old settler of Canterbury.  We understand
                                Mr Johnston arrived on the barque "Rebecca"  on 7th January 1850  under an engagement.

   -     on 18 April to prisoner August Schroeder who was a sailor belonging to the "Melita"

8am on board barque "Union" - William Taylor at Lyttelton. also lengthy write up on the inquest.
