The Pohutukawa is also known as the New Zealand
Christmas Tree for the timing of its flowering. Seen predominantly
in the northern regions of the North Island, the Pohutukawa is a coastal
tree. However extensive plantings means it can bee seen as far south
as Dunedin in the lower South Island.
The inner bark and nectar was used for a variety
of medicinal purposes by Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand.
The deep red timber is very strong and durable.
Here in Island Bay, Pohutukawa trees have been
planted along the length of the main street. Many hundred of these
everygreen trees line The Parade and present a spectacular image as they
bloom at Christmas time.
