This page contains some answers to
questions people frequently ask us as well
as some useful links to other webpages.
How do I get a visa to come to New Zealand?
When you apply to us, we will send you an invoice. If
you are studying for less than 3 months, you probably
don't need a visa to enter New Zealand. If you are studying for longer than 3 months, you will need a
student visa. To get this, you need to pay us the amount on the invoice, and then we will send you a
Letter of Acceptance, which you take to the New Zealand Embassy or Consulate, and they will process
your student visa application form. For up-to-date information on visas, check with your local NZ
Embassy or Consulate.
What is the weather like in Auckland?
Because we are in the southern hemisphere, our summer is December to March and our winter is June
to August. Auckland is temperate city, which means that the summer is warm and humid with
temperatures reaching a maximum of 26-30 and the winter is cool and wet, with temperatures reaching
a maximum of 12-16. Visitors coming winter and spring should bring a raincoat or something to keep
you dry and warm. Click here for today's weather in New Zealand.
What money do you use in NZ?
We use New Zealand dollars. To find today's exchange rate between the NZ dollar and your currency,

How many students will there be in my class?
We never have more than 8 per group. The average size is 5 or 6, and that means that you get lots of
personal attention and you can make fast progress. You will also be able to get to know others very
comfortably.
How is Active English different from other schools?
Active English has very small classes and a special 'at home' atmosphere which helps you to gain
confidence in your English. We never have more than 48 students so you get to know everyone well.
We believe that small is beautiful because we can give you lots of personal attention and service. We
are located in a beautiful Victorian villa in Parnell, Auckland, which means that we are in a quiet area
away from the noise and traffic of downtown Auckland, but we are only 7 minutes by bus from the
downtown area. This means our location is very convenient. We are also different because we teach
more than just the language. The cultural aspects of language learning are very important, so we help
you to learn how to understand NZ and English-speaking culture. You will learn how to 'be a New
Zealander' and to gain more flexibility and skill with the language.
What if I have a problem and I cannot explain it in English?
We have counsellors here who speak your language. We have a full-time Japanese staff member who
also helps with other problems you may have as you get used to New Zealand life.
What happens when I arrive?
Your homestay family will meet you at the airport when you arrive and take you home. From the
moment you arrive in Auckland, you will receive complete care and attention from Active English staff
and homestay families.
What happens if I do not like my homestay family?
We understand that sometimes it is difficult to get used to living in a new culture and our homestay
families also understand this. However, if for some reason you are uncomfortable with your homestay
family during your first week, we will find you another family. We know how important it is to be
comfortable in your homestay situation.
I want to see some of New Zealand as well as learn English. What can I do at the weekends or
after I finish my course?
There are a number of weekend tours that you can do. It is possible to visit the Bay of Islands, Rotorua,
Taupo, Coromandel or the beautiful beaches and bush of west Auckland. We will help you arrange a
weekend trip that is perfectly suited to your needs. After you finish your course, you may also want to
travel around New Zealand and we can give you advice and help you organise a trip. Here are some links
to other sites that might give you an idea of what you can do: Bush and Beach, Kiwi Experience,
