This guy doesn't look too friendly and a lot of people are freaked out by them, but the common tree weta is relatively harmless. If threatened it can, in self defence, inflict a painful bite or a scratch with the prominent spines on it's legs especially the hind legs which it raises over it's back menacingly.
This one hitched a ride into our lounge on some firewood. This photo shows the enormous length of their feelers.
The tree wetas hide during the day and come out at night to feed on the foliage of trees as well as other small insects and their larvae. Often at night we hear their strange rasping - mostly outside and not in the lounge thank goodness!
