Welcome to the Home page of the pre 1848 Settlers of Otago and Southland in New Zealand.

The aim of the site is to be a living document and to provide an ongoing focus for the pre 1848 settler's descendants. The site has been set up and maintained by the committee who organised a reunion of descendants  in 1998

We would welcome feedback and additions to the site. Given that the pre 1848 settlers arrived over a considerable period of time and in some cases were transient in nature we cannot vouch that the information here is complete or absolutely accurate. The individual pages on the settler families have been provided (by and large) by their descendants.

Who are the pre1848 settlers?

The generally promoted view is that the organised settlement of Otago and Southland began with the arrival of the Scottish Free Church settlers in 1848. In fact there had been a steady stream of settlers arriving since the early 1800s. These included  Sealers & Whalers as well as settlers who set up shore stations, surveyors, farmers and missionaries.

In fact when the Philip Laing and the John Wickcliffe in 1848 arrived they were greeted by an established band of settlers including families with children who had been born in Otago. Some of the early settlers had married into the local Kai Tahu families and this cemented the peaceful relationship with the Maori people in the area. These earliest settlers were also crucial to the success of the settlement as they provided food, piloting and guidance to the new arrivals. An account of these earliest settlers was written back in 1898 when some were still alive. We have reproduced this on this website at the following link
