Garrett Clearwater was born in Paramus, Bergen New Jersey in 1816. He arrived in New Zealand on the "Lucy Ann" in 1838 and worked as a boatbuilder, carpenter, cooper and sawyer. Garret married Ann Stevenson who arrived on the "Philip Laing" in 1848. They settled firstly at Company Bay and then Broad Bay on the Otago Peninsula, where they raised six sons and one daughter.

Their descendents (and the Clearwater name) still lives on the Otago Peninsula
