Welcome to our Home page of the McKelvey Families who have settled in New Zealand. Our Family Research has indicated that there were at least four main lines who settled here plus some other scattered individuals who we have not been able to trace lineages for. It is our intention to share the information we have gained in the hope it will be of value to other researchers and may also generate feedback to allow us to better document some of the lines. The Principal lines include; James Edward McKelvey & Bridget Devery James originally came to New Zealand in 1863 with the 40th Regiment to fight in the New Zealand Land Wars and later returned to settle in Dunedin. James & Bridget had four sons, three of who had families of their own. The descendents are scattered throughout New Zealand William McKelvey & Charlotte Toms Originally came to Wellington New Zealand as part of the 65th Regiment in the late 1840's when the settlers were experiencing problems with the prominent Maori chief Te Rauparaha. On Discharge from the the army in 1849 William became the Turnkey for the Wellington Gaol. There are a large number of descendents now largely concentrated around the Wellington Region The pages have been updated with information provided by Ian Stewart Alexander Neil McKelvey Born in Ireland, Alexander was a prominent Surgeon and Physician in Auckland New Zealand The pages have been updated with information provided by Mary Slavin from Perth Western Australia Archibald McKelvey & Annie Samson Archibald McKelvey arrived in New Zealand as an assisted immigrant in 1877 and settled in the small township of Woodside south of Dunedin on the Taieri Plains. It is believed that were three sons and three daughters. It would appear that none of the sons had children and this particular line of the name appears to have died out. The Daughters married and there are some descendents of these lines. The pages have been updated with information provided by Gaynor McDowell
