to - A Fun Event For Girls

Commencing 6 January 2002, 500+ 13-18 year old girls ...

• were based at Wingatui, South of Dunedin

• met other young women including some from overseas

• participated in one of 28 five-day activities (see below)

• had the opportunity to choose from a wide range of day and half day programmes (eg photography, golf, goldmining, Taieri Gorge Railway, craft crawl, ride a horse, visit the university...)

In spite of the rain, the girls have been able to concentrate on some serious fun... according to programme. 

Agribusiness	Lots of "hands-on" farming activities including horticulture and a variety of animals - based near a farming community at the edge of the Taieri Plains.   Girls' comments afterwards: "lots of different hands-on experiences"
Animal Antics	Fins, fur, feathers and fun - a variety of animal care activities in and around Dunedin. Includes a visit to a vet and overnight at the aquarium. "we talked to the animals"
Aviation	An introduction to flying the "high" road around the Taieri Plain. Experience the fun and thrill of learning to fly, as a qualified flight instructor takes you through the basics. Theory and practical flights introduce you to obtain a pilots licence. Age 16 years +. "the theory was fun, but flying was best"
Beaches, Tunnels and Castles	Explore surfing beaches, tunnels and caves plus local castles and what they have to offer by day and by night. See seals, penguins and albatrosses. Surf life saving (optional). "we did nearly all activities in spite of the weather"
Bounty Hunting in Otago	Detective skills, cunning, intuition and a sharp eye needed for this job - a brief on a wanted "criminal" is given and the you then set off to find…….. "travelling & sightseeing", "doing good turns for farmers", "driving into the bush at 10.30pm to find a clue", "catching the bounty in Dunedin"
Bridge to Bridge Rafting	A rafting journey/ challenge for source to (almost) sea. Thrills in the outdoors as you experience the fun and tumbles of going down a river by raft. Near the end the Taieri 7 Event Challenge awaits you. Bring your own wetsuit. Moderate fitness. "waves... flipping... getting tipped out"
Canoe Journey	A 5 day journey in Canadian canoes, on the mighty Clutha river - includes training and rescue training. Must be able to swim 50m with confidence. "sailing with canoes"
City Discovery	Visit everywhere that Dunedin is famous for. Be the proper "tourist", experience famous buildings, wildlife venues and take part in leisure activities - discover Dunedin's delightful atmosphere. "walking the steepest street in the world"
Craft Craze	Something for everyone as you do a range of crafts. A professional tutor will take you through steps to complete wonderful projects - takeaway goodies. "we made heaps of different things"
Crazy Adventure - Wild Earth	This is the one for the adventurer who is having difficulty making up her mind which one to try! Experience 1 day each of kayaking, mountain biking, team activities, rock climbing/abseiling. Moderate fitness needed. Need to be able to float. "all the activities were cool"
Dunstan Trail	Famous in New Zealand! This is a biking expedition. Take the TAIERI Gorge train, bike the Rail Trail and loop back over the Dunstan Trail. Moderate fitness required. "biking downhill & along the trail"
Equestrian Experience	Equestrian care and riding for those who can already walk, trot and canter on horseback. Overnight trek included. 15 years plus. "we got to ride horses when the weather improved"
Flatting Together	Discover the joys of flatting on campus - learn the skills that you need - buy your groceries and cook all your meals - with a "best flat" competition. 16 plus. "we chose to do everything"
Media	Write, produce and present your own radio programme, with the guidance of a local radio station. Visit other media producers too. "we liked making the movie"
Pamper Yourself	Hair grooming, hair colouring, make up, skin care, gym visit……. "frogs on the roof, and retail therapy"
Photography	Learn a variety of photographic techniques and develop your own pictures. "lots of options"
Queenstown - under 16 A	Take in the sights of this famous tourist destination and participate in adventurous activities in this alpine location. Experience an Earnslaw trip to Walter Peak, the Shotover Stables, Gondola/Luge/Kiwi Magic Imax show, jet boat ride and much more! "enjoyed everything, even the custard"
Queenstown - under 16 B	Take in the sights of this famous tourist destination and participate in adventurous activities in this alpine location. Scuba Diving	An intensive practical and academic course, pool sessions - you will get a referral letter to complete open water dives in your home area. Need a passport photo and lightweight wetsuit. A special medical form will be sent to participants prior to the event plus a manual on diving. "getting to the bottom on the last day"
Sea Kayaking	2 days skill training and then an adventure along the coast! Supply own wetsuits. Moderate fitness required. "staying on the island, leaders dancing"
Slice of Otago	A holiday near the historic Rail Trail - kayaking, fishing, swimming and an overnight tramp. Enjoy a farm stay in the heart of Otago - relax and paddle those feet in a comfortable country atmosphere. "the hammock on Pete's farm"
Sport Otago	A range of traditional and new sports - have a go at petanque, ice skating, surf life saving, water skiing, hydrosliding and more. Something for everyone! "different routes to many destinations"
Stewart Island	Travel to Invercargill and sight see along the way - an adventure even to get there - go by boat to Stewart Island - New Zealand's third largest island - and experience its wildlife - you may see kiwis and penguins coming in to land at night. Waitati Outdoor Adventure	Keen to have a go at a range of challenging outdoor activities? This is the one for you! try tramping, initiative activities, canoeing, rock climbing and an overnight island adventure. Something for everyone! "making new m8s"
Wander in Wanaka	Heaps of adventurous activities in this scenic area - Have a Shot, the Maze, Rob Roy Glacier trip, Transport and Toy Museum, Warbirds Museum, a boat trip to Pigeon Island, Horse Trekking and much more! "awesome horse-trekking"
Water Multi Sports	A variety of water sports and experiences based around Otago's harbour. Try large and small boats, visit the aquarium for some "hands" on experience. Try windsurfing, surfing and a lifesaving course. Bring your own wetsuits. "windsurfing very cool"
