1997 June 28 UTC
(S43.5 E172.5) - West Melton, Canterbury, New Zealand
0730 Glow, hemisphere in shape, centred near S, 45 deg width across horizon, and 25 to 30 deg above horizon. Light-yellow to light-green in colour.
0830 A "brighter dome" 5 to 7 deg across and about 15 deg high developed within the general glow. Initially it was central but then over 3/4 hour shifted to the west still within the general glow area. Then it moved back towards the centre, but had faded and disappeared before it reached the centre. At one stage there was a hint of rising bands but because it was behind cloud it was a bit hard to determine.
0930 Still visible.
0945 Lost view in glare of Christchurch city lights while driving home.

(S46.4 E169.8) - Otekura, South Otago, New Zealand
0930 Faint, white glow in S and SW. Not too many rays. Very slow pulsation. Gone after half an hour.
