Timaru Celtic Rugby Football Club Founded 1906

How and when the club started.

The then Parish Priest of the Sacred Heart Church,The Reverend Father Tubman S.M.,later to be elevated to a Dean, assigned one of his staff,The Reverend Father Le Floch S.M. to form the first club in the parish of boys and young men who had recently left school or had arrived in Timaru by only a short time and his command of the English language was limited, however this did not impair his enthusiasm for the allotted task ahead. The boys were told to attend the first meeting personally and some with a guilty complex thought they were being called to the presbytery for a reprimand. News from the archives tell us the longest debate at this initial meeting was to name the club-"Celtic" or "Marist Old Boys"-the former carried the day.The playing colors were as of now, red and green-the red relating to the Catholic Martyrs of France as a gesture to the first president,Father Le Flock-and the green relating to the fields of Ireland,J.C. Wade was the first secretary,March 1906.
